I am pretty new to this site, I hear alot of the bass guys talk about drop shotting… I have never fished this rig and I was wondering the best techniques, how to tie it successfully, what hooks and weights work the best, what bait works the best ETC. I would like any help I can get, it sounds like this rig is money at jordanelle and other local bass ponds.
Not a bass pro but I use a drop shop rig for Ice fishing.
Weight on the bottom of your line with 1 or 2 hooks higher up.
Just when you think you are fishing a drop shot rig slow enough… slow down even more.
If’n you want to see a drop shot rig in action, let me know. I live about 10 mins from the nelle and have used a drop shot once or twice and could help you out.
Ya I would love that. I have seen a few different ways to rig the drop shot, I am just wondering the best way to tie it and best baits and techniques to use?
The picture above is a good example. I like to keep my bait about 12-18 inches above my weight, but it all depends on the structure I am fishing. Also, I have found the a live night crawler pinched in half and then threaded on the hook produces the best results. Soft plastics and minnows work well to but I have caught all different types of fish on a drop shot with a crawler. Slow and structure are the key. Even if you don’t mark fish on the sonar find where they sould be and then let the dropshot do its thing. You will for sure catch fish

I’ve been trying all year to catch my first bass with no luck. I tried the drop shot rig for a little while but I gave up. I know, practice makes perfect. I’m confused about the usage of the drop shot rig. Can you cast it or is it strictly for jigging straight up and down? If you do cast it how do you work it? Don’t mean to hijack the thread, just can’t pin this one down.
You can cast the drop shot or vertical jig it. Just make sure when you fish the drop shot to keep the weight in constant contact with the bottom. Keep the line tight for the most part and just barely shake the rod tip to give the bait action. Drop the rod tip and let the bait sink to the bottom. Fish it in depths from 1-25 feet. That’s always a good start.

The best way to learn how to fish and rig the drop shot is to get with some one and have them show you, and even get on the water with them to see how it works…
Some time the hardest thing about the drop shot is knowing when you have a fish on or just a snag or moss…

Cool, how did you do?? We went to Deer Creek this morning, tried the drop shot caught about a 3 1/2 LB. Rainbow and a bunch of little rat small mouth. All in all a few couple of hours. I would still like to Co-Angler with you Bassrods and get taught a few things.
