I am looking for a either a cheap motorhome to rent or a cheap hotel does anyone have any ideas from their own experience? There will be four or five of us going and we are just looking for the cheapest route to take. thanks a bunch.
Just sleep out with the bears ya girl! You excited to go catch some salmon?
Oh man i cant wait to be there, its coming up fast. I think we are just going to rent an RV while we are there but will see if anyone else has any good ideas. I bet you cant wait to see my face up there. You better leave some fish for me.
Not a lot of availability if your going before August. I was just looking there and south of there in the Kasilof to Ninilchik area. Did you check availability for your dates at the Best Western in Soldotna? Contacted a dozen places and finally found a 4 bedroom cabin that had a cancellation this past weekend They do have some availability about July 16 -27 from that cancellation leftover- it’s 300 a night. Cheaper than 2 hotel room and a discount for staying a week. I found 2 or 3 other places that have small cabins in the $ 150-200 a night range but I know one only slept upto 3. RV’s are pretty expensive as well ( I looked) and availbility isn’t that good either. RV are pretty cramped and the showers suck especially after a fun day smearing salmon guts over yourself all day[crazy]. Send me a pm if your interested in any leads on cabins just south of Soldotna and I’ll give you the info. I’m not planning on leaving any salmon for you [:P] so you better get up there before the end of July.
we did it a few years back on the cheap, rented a minvan in Anchorage and drove down the Kenia, stayed in tents in a camp ground just out of Sodotna, never had any bear issues. Bring a vaccum packer and rent locker space for your fish, what would suck now is the high price for xtra bags on the plane, maybe cheaper to ship home now days. Don’t miss good time Charlies for a beer after a hard day on the river [;)]
In Ninilchik, maybe 25 miles away, there is a place called the Alaskan Angler Resort. They have small cabins and such for their clients and othere tourists. They also conduct a really good guide service. We stay with them every time we go. It’s right on Cook Inlet by Deep Creek.

You used to be able to park RVs at a big RV park behind the Fred Meyer store in Soldatna.
If you rent a motor home from ABC or any of them…Make them sign that there are no pits or anything in the windshield and windows before you go out…Don’t let them hook you for damage that is not your fault…Been there, done that.
6 of us went to Alaska and stayed in Soldatna in the camp ground just outside of town for 5 days. It was great. There is a place you can take a pay shower in town. We flew all our tents, sleeping bags, poles and food in. Rented a van and shared the cost of the camp and the van. It cost each of us $125.00 above the air fare and a half day trip for halibut. I loved it. We fished till 11pm and was up fishing by 5 am. We were all dead at the end but we caught a lot salmon and halibut. Good luck.
hey thanks a bunch for all the reply’s i think we may just set up a tent.
Don’t know if you have found anything yet but figured I would chime in on some of the places I have stayed. Last August we stayed at the Aspen Hotel in Soldotna, very nice hotel and competitive pricing. www.aspenhotelsak.com (907) 260-7736.
The Best Western King Salmon in Soldotna isn’t as nice as the Aspen but still decent and after all your not worried so much about the nice ammenaties as you are the nice fish I’m sure [;)] www.bestwesternalaska.com (901)262-5957.
Every year I fish with a great Halibut captain (Al Sherman) out of the Deep Creeks in Ninilchik. The charter that he works with a lot has some nice little cabins in Ninilchik that are reasonably priced and can sleep several people. www.ninilchik.com (800) 973-4742. The Ninilchick river is right there and makes for some fun nights wading in the water and trying for a few salmon, I believe there is still a no bait (artificial only) rule for this river. Also great camping areas in Ninilchick, you can camp up in the trees in a camp ground with restroom facilities or right on the beach. Al is a great captain if you are interested I have his number. Ninilchik is about 40 miles from Soldotna.
There are a few other places in Kenai but I haven’t stayed at them myself to give any recommendations.
Another nice place with a fun little bar and restaraunt is Anchor River Inn in Anchor Point which is almost 60 miles from Soldotna, a bit far to commute but a good middle point if you want to head to Homer. www.anchorriverinn.com (800)435-8531.The Anchor river is right by there and can produce some fun fishing.
Hope this helps.
If you go the camping route I’d second stickchick’s recommendation of camping on the beach. Ninilchik is nice but just a tad south at Deep Creek State Rec. Area was my favorite on a previous trip. The cheapest cabins I found in the area can be found at http://www.smartcharters.com/camping.htm
as cheap as $115/ night for a group but availability can be an issue.
