It took me and Justin about 7 hours to get an elk out 1/2 mile from the truck, and that was a “Small” cow elk. After it was all said and done, I couldn’t walk for the next couple of days and I was sore for a week.
Yes, it’s always worth it when you look back on the experience, but while doing it, it sucks bad!!!
Upon further review, it is a cow elk tag but I had a second choice so I don’t know which area it is yet, but both were late winter hunts.
I have harvested two other cow elk before, got both of them out whole. One on a tabogan, shot that one at the top of the mountain and rode it down to the truck and the other we managed to get it on top of my four wheeler (a 300EX) and tie it down, remember it’s still whole and straddle it and rode on top of it all the way down the canyon, what a sight that was.
From past experience, it is unlikely you will get a 2nd or 3rd draw because all the permits are gone by then[;)]. I did get a second draw years ago but it was a late season hunt in an area no one wanted to hunt.
Yeah that has been my experience as well, first choice or nothing. That is why I am going to assume I drew Durst Mountain elk after the CC hit yesterday afternoon.
Looks like me, my friend, and my son drew. It will be my sons first hunt. The cow elk hunt will be a great start for him. If I get one, it will be a bonus.
This is turning out to be a great year. Here are my hunts for the year.
