This came up as a result of a photo in the catch every species thread. Can you tell with out a doubt which fish this is? The fish in this photo displays the characteristics of both Greater Amberjack and Almaco Jack.

This is Almaco with Amberjack on same table, the Almaco are the smaller fish on the right. You may notice the dorsal fin has more of a point and is curved. Also the Almaco have more of a football shape.
The lateral line and coloration is also different in the two fish, atleast right out of the water. [;)]
Even the Caudal Penducal fin is different.
That’s it!!! I’m taking away all your biology books. 
Now, in english for us steve. LOL
Put it this way. I am an EMT. I am very familliar with the anatomy.
Since this is a family site, I will let you know that if you had a Caudal Penducal fin it would be just below the belt line for a human.
Since a fish doesn’t wear a belt, that makes it the Anal Fin.
Ok, since you guys seem to know so much, check the first post and click the image. Which one do you think it is? The fish has the body shape and coloration of the Greater but the dorsal and Anal fins look like a Almaco. I’m looking for a little help here
Judging only by the picture, certainly not from experience, I would say its a Almaco. But what do I know. I’m a self confessed rookie in saltwater fishing! Thanks Capt Joe for the invite to this forum! UJ
OK, i’ve got it. It’s a ambmaco jack. LOL
It’s hard to tell, the picture is pretty much inconclusive. It’s close enough to pass for both. [;)]
