I’m sure a few of you have heard about the new plans for the 21st pond. They will be making it a big waterski lake and it is now owned by “Goode ski company”, and has been renamed “Goode” lake.
I have had some good times as a kid at that pond. Flycastin and I used to catch some nice trout and bass out of there as well as many other species and mutants. In 1999 they planted some 3-5 pound brook trout in there and they all died within a month, but we managed to land a couple before they died. There have also been tiger musky in there (Illegally planted).
Anyway, the paper mentioned that the lake will eventually be opened back up to fishing for the public. Just wondering what they might do with it as far as species planted and stuff. That place would be an excellent community fishing pond.
There are probably some monster bass in there by now, as well as some big nasty mutants 
Ive heard that there will only be certain areas of the lake opeen to fishing, you heard anything like that Matt?
The article in the paper yesterday said that there would be certain areas open to fishing. The article a week ago said that the whole lake would be open to fishing when the project is done, so I don’t know what will happen.
I guess we’ll just have to see. I love that place! I hope they do some good planning and plant some nice fish in there or something. Right now the lake is so full of carp that you could walk across the lake on thier backs.
Probably won’t be able to float a pontoon or float tube once the lake i done. You might get run over [crazy]
This is the first that I have heard about it but I think it is long over due. Did the article say anything about the fish being safe to eat now? If I remember correctly, that is the reason for it being closed in the first place. When you say they are going to make it a “BIG WATERSKI LAKE”, does that mean they are going to enlarge the lake? I know they used it in the past for water skiing but it is still a very small place for skiing[crazy].
where is this lake? slc? or ogden?
they did say something about enlarging it alittle.
Yeah, the are already in the process of enlarging the lake. It won’t be twice as big, but they are adding a good chunk to it.
The fish are disgusting from there, I would never eat one. I took one home as a kid and the meat was green and stunk. But that doesn’t mean they’re not fun to catch.
The lake will host waterski tournaments and they are hoping to have the World Championships there in the next couple of years. Seems a little small to me, but whatever.
The lake is in Ogden on 21st down by the freeway.
A couple years ago that pond was stuffed with carp. I’d be surprized if any survive there now. They had the whole lake drained completely to the mud for about four months a couple years ago doing a bunch of construction/excavation on the east end. I drive by there daily and haven’t ever seen any signs of fish (splashes or rings on the water) since it was drained empty.
It would be nice to see public access restored and some catchable fish planted again.
I live very close to 21st pond and has had my eye on it for a while. So about a month or two ago I made some calls.First to Ogden city…That was a dead end all i got was voice mails and no returned calls. So then I called DWR they were very helpful. The guy that runs the urban fisheries said that he had been out there a few times. he said that there are fish in there (mostly carp), and that Ogden city is talking to them about having it stocked. But he said the pond still needs more clean up before that will happen. As for fishing there, he told me that he did not know if Ogden city still had it closed or not But like Hookjaw said about the green meat… He told me if I did catch a fish out of there DO NOT EAT IT!!
I heard the reason they closed the pond in the first place was because they did not want people to eat the fish there. That the landfill right next to it had contaminated the lake. Seems strange they would open it back up to fishing if that was the case but it will provide some good fishing opportunity to those that can’t go far for a little fishing. WH2
Might be a secret plan to “thin the herd” of the poachers and happy harvesters that clean out our community ponds. When they see the signs “Do Not Keep Fish” they will just laugh and take home a barrel full to eat. Might be a slow process, depending on how potent the “leftovers” are, but it should keep a few of them off the waters in the future.
Kinda like wrapping your trash in a nice box and leaving it on the curb with a “Do Not Take” sign. Guaranteed somebody will remove it shortly.
I was pondering practicing my catch and release, there. Well…if I ever catch anything to begin with!
I want to get good at being careful but quick about removing hooks and hurrying to take measurements, so that I don’t have the poor things ‘drowning’ in the air whilest I gather info!
Definitely TWO parts to catch and release. You can’t have the latter without the former.
Goode makes very high end snow and water skis. They will be enlarging the lake, and the Goode sponsored skiers will be the main reason to get big tourneys there.
The problem with pollution wasn’t so much the landfill, as it is a dry construction waste landfill, but the railroad next to it as well. Probably a lot like the pollution from trains between Sunset and HAFB. They have been cleaning it up for years now, and when the project is complete, it will be very nice. Goode has a lot of money in this project, and he has deep pockets, so it should be world class. The landfill is being capped, and there will be a nice amphitheater on the west side to watch the events held there. It will be interesting to see what kind of fishery will be managed there…probably not Asian Carp!!![:p]
I have been bummed over the loss of this fishery for a long time. Since it was closed due to contamination from Mouldings (the dump), why doesn’t the city (the owner of said pond) sue Mouldings for the cost of building a new community pond. If they can’t figure out where I can show them quite a few locations that are close to town with rivers running through or near them. Better yet why doesn’t someone sue Mouldings for the polution and also sue the city for not doing anything. Rant over.
Thats a good point… Seems like every city but[/u] Ogden has a healthy… productive… community pond. They want to make Ogden an outdoor mecca. Well what about fishing? My guess is… Mayor Godfrey doesn’t own a rod n’ reel.
There is at least one more pond in ogden that I know about and that is up near glassman’s way, I think that is what it is called. It is a small pond but it is stocked and has lots of fish most of the time. It is south of the new Mcdee hospital, I think it has cats, bluegill, maybe even some brook trout. There could be others but that is the only one I can remember right now. WH2
Yep, Glassman’s Pond. That’s where HJ and I helped with the Urban Fisheries Program last year.
Mayor Godfrey also did quite a bit for the Ogden River Parkway if I remember correctly.

and yes Glassmans pond is a good place to fish. But I was thinking they need something further north. Technically Glassmans is in South Ogden city… Not Ogden city.
And yes Mayor Godfrey has done some work on the Ogden river witch is my favorite places to fish. I have noticed improvements.In fact I live on 15st just west of washington. They have been been tearing down all the old run down houses and buildings along the river in this area. Seems like they have big plans for the river. And i guess I shouldn’t complain since I can be at like Pineview in like 15 mins.
So don’t get me wrong… There is tons of great fishing in and around Weber county.I know we are very lucky.
