Reliable handheld fish finder

Based on how Sonar works, i can't see a handheld sonar really being terribly effective. It will probably be good for gauging depth, but actually being able to look at it and determine bottom structure, bottom make up, and actually see fish; I doubt it. If your goal is to get depth and the most basic of structure recognition, i think it's better than nothing. If your looking for something beyond that, you need to buy a boat and get a good Lowrance or garmin color unit.
