Reliable handheld fish finder - stephwilkins - 03-19-2014
Trying to find a cheap handheld fish finder for freshwater fishing this summer. I found the Hawkeye F33P. Seems cheap and has some pretty good reveiws. Has anyone else tried this fishfinder? Any opinions would be helpful. [fishon]http://www.hawkeyeelectronics.com/f33p-hand-held-fish-finder/

Based on how Sonar works, i can't see a handheld sonar really being terribly effective. It will probably be good for gauging depth, but actually being able to look at it and determine bottom structure, bottom make up, and actually see fish; I doubt it. If your goal is to get depth and the most basic of structure recognition, i think it's better than nothing. If your looking for something beyond that, you need to buy a boat and get a good Lowrance or garmin color unit.

If you mean that $50 thing from Harbor Freight, save yourself the hassle.
I had an earlier unit of that type that I used on my pontoon craft; it worked fine and maybe still does (I gave it and the pontoon away). I bought a newer version to use ice fishing, and it was total crappola. I got a full refund.
From the reviews, I suspect getting a good one is very much hit or miss - with a lot more miss than hit.
I'd get Humminbird Fishin' Buddy, with is a much more reliable self-contained unit.

So I decided to take the leap and try the hawkeye f33p portable fish finder. So far so good, ive probably have used it about 5 times since i bought it. it seems to be a pretty nifty tool. shows me fish, weed indicator bottom contour and fish depth. So far no complaints here.
