Some of my fly boxes are good sized, and I do carry a bunch. Nice thing for me is my side bags are removeable, so I take the whole bag at times.
But, you mentioned something with a shoulder strap, I use a sling:

If I am fishing a river I do take boxes out of side bags and throw them in here. Pretty easy. I do keep the split shot, floatant, extra clippers and forceps in this sling.
