Tackle pack suggestions please - StillinID - 03-21-2011
Greetings all,
Debated whether to put this in the tackle section or here but wanted it focused on being used with a tube so....
Having just returned to fishing and getting into float tubing, I am discovering that I need an easy method/system to move gear back and forth between tube and Shore/Vest use.
I like the variety of plastic boxes that fit in the tube pockets as well as the vest pockets making transfer easy.
What I need is a bag or backpack system to store and transport them in.
Looking to get suggestions with the following criteria:
1. Must be able to sling it over a shoulder or otherwise have a carrying strap. The traditional "Tackle Box" w/top handle just is not cutting it anymore.
2. Must easily accomodate the 4x7in. boxes from the float tube.
3. Be economical (of course!) If this was not a criteria I could buy multiples of everything and never need to switch, right? Also, I am still new enough to it that I do not need one of the $200+ "tackle systems".
Yes, I am well aware that a basic Jansport backpack fits the bill here and that may be the answer however I see some soft tackle bags out there that might be nice as well.
Your recommendations? What are you using?

[cool][#0000ff]Always a question as to which is the best system. I have used tackle boxes, backbacks, gym bags, and cardboard boxes. I have been using a "tackle bag" like the pic below for several years now and it works great.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]It has enough space to store several "trip boxes", my sonar battery, extra line spools, camera, etc. I make sure it is properly loaded before each trip and then transfer the gear from it to my tube before I launch. Then when I come back in, I unload my tube back into the bag. [/#0000ff]

Some of my fly boxes are good sized, and I do carry a bunch. Nice thing for me is my side bags are removeable, so I take the whole bag at times.
But, you mentioned something with a shoulder strap, I use a sling:

If I am fishing a river I do take boxes out of side bags and throw them in here. Pretty easy. I do keep the split shot, floatant, extra clippers and forceps in this sling.

I use this bag to haul all my stuff in for tubing. As you can see it holds lots of boxes as well as different other types of baits in the outer pockets.

[cool][#0000ff]Just a hint. You don't have to buy a top of the line new bag. Getting into the yard sale season and I have picked up some good fishing bags over the years by driving and looking. Also good potential in thrift shops like Savers or Deseret Industries if you have similar in your area.[/#0000ff]

Check the clearance on Cabelas and Bass Pro. I got my recent bag for $20, normally it would have been $70 and I love it.

I think I found one that should work and very reasonable at about $30 with 5 boxes included. All of the boxes should fit in the tubes if I were so inclined.
Going with the Flambeau 3005ST. Saw it at Cabelas but will prob order it from Amazon for price. Some reviews say to watch the bottom weight and put heavy stuff in the top section. Not intended for the 2-3 day per week fisherman but it should work for me.

Hi all,
Thought I would throw out 1 more update on that Flambeau pack. Only issue I have noticed with it so far is that the lids to the plastic boxes tends to come loose (unhinged) rather easily. I have emailed Flambeau Outdoors about it to see if there is a solution from them but no response as of yet.
My own solution was to take a bit of clear caulk and dab it over the bottom of the hinges just as a stopper. We'll see how that holds up.

Diaper bag is good.
I use an ugly blue and white nylon airlines bag that must be circa 1960 something!!!![laugh][laugh][laugh][laugh] Not quite as big as some diaper bags, but it is light, divided into sections, and it slings over my shoulder nicely. I really hate the color though. I would like something a little more neutral. I may have to check out the diaper bags for a replacement!
