The tablets are good if you don't trust things. Just be sure and follow the directions especially concerning the time you let it sit.
I do a lot of backpacking so I use filters a lot. The filters have gotten a lot safer in recent years. You might check out the Seychelle site.

They now filter out or kill just about everything including bacteria and viruses. Look at the Seychelle "Advanced" filters on the water bottles or in-line filters that fit on camelback. They even have "Straw" filters now.
I really think that the cost is reasonable myself. Find what works for you and you feel comfortable with, but in that kind of heat I'd have some kind of backup plan.
