Santa Ynez FF today - peter805 - 10-10-2009 So, I went to Santa Ynez River (more like pools) today to do a little of fly fishing. Weather was just great. About 74F and low wind for the most part. I hiked in about 1 mile . There was nobody there at all. Just me, the fish, deer, mountan lion ( I seen lion foot prints)............ I went off the trial to my secret pool and on the way I found this poor turtle stuck between rocks. I picked up the little dude and took him with me to my secret pool. It was water turtle so I put him next to the water after a photo moment and after like one minute he was gone in water. Good for him. (or her, whatever). Anyways, Fishing was good, couple dozen of green sunfish and two SM bass. Now here in SoCal SM bass is kinda rare so get two of those in one day is way cool. The second one (in my secret pool) sure did put a huge bend in my rod (5WT). Thats all guys, till next time. MacFly [cool] [signature] Re: [macfly55] Santa Ynez FF today - peter805 - 10-10-2009 Yes that is the new chest/back pack. Well, I have mixed feelings about it. Good- Can pack whatever I need. Fishing stuff, jacket, four bottles of water or more, food............ Bad-Kinda hard to see in front of you where you stepping. Hard to put it on and off.Hard to cast with it ,so it has to come off. Every time I wear it I have a pain in my lower and mid back. Its Cabelas product , so I may return it. Im not too crazy about it. There is a very cool Fishpond vest with back pack. I may try that. Im not sure just yet. Peter [signature] Re: [peter805] Santa Ynez FF today - flygoddess - 10-10-2009 Great report! Love the turtle. [signature] Re: [peter805] Santa Ynez FF today - macfly55 - 10-11-2009 thanks for the report.. sorry its not as comfy as it looks.. maybe the fishpond will be better... MacFly [cool] [signature] Re: [macfly55] Santa Ynez FF today - peter805 - 10-11-2009 Yeah, the fishpond one is more like a vest with backpack. I need to save couple of pennies first.[ ![]() Peter [url "http://javascript:void(0);"] ![]() [signature] Re: [peter805] Santa Ynez FF today - macfly55 - 10-11-2009 are you dead set on a back pack... that orvis pouch that I have is great.. lots of room.. can carry a bottle of water as well.. :-) MacFly [cool] [signature] Re: [macfly55] Santa Ynez FF today - peter805 - 10-11-2009 Well, see I need to carry more like four bottles of water for a day of fishing at 90F+ in summer. Sometimes four bottles in not a nuff. I like to hike away from people, so no going back to car until the end of day. Plus some food. Remember Im talking ALL day here[ ![]() In late fall and winter it would be nice to have a place to put a jacket and worm stuff like that. The pictures you seen from Santa Ynez is the place where you can go for miles and miles. And ofcourse the more you hike the better it gets. Last time I was there (2 days ago), I was out away from my car and everything about 10 hours. 9am to 7pm. So see, backpack is a must for me.For the most part to be able to take like six bottles of water in summer and some food. Peter [signature] Re: [peter805] Santa Ynez FF today - macfly55 - 10-11-2009 that makes sense to me.. did not realize how far you hiked away from your vehicle.. Im sure you will find a backpack rig to suit your needs.... it may take [cool]time .. but Im sure you will.. [ ![]() MacFly [cool] [signature] Re: [macfly55] Santa Ynez FF today - peter805 - 10-11-2009 Thank you MacFly[ ![]() Im sure I will too. For now I just keep using what I got. Laters Peter [signature] Re: [peter805] Santa Ynez FF today - cpierce - 10-11-2009 Have you considered a water filter and maybe even a sterilizer like the steripen? That way you don't have to pack all your water. If nothing else do you keep some kind of water sterilizer tablets with you for emergencies? [signature] Re: [cpierce] Santa Ynez FF today - peter805 - 10-11-2009 Thank you for your reply. Yes, I did think of filter system. They are NOT 100% safe and it looks like a lot of work. Plus I still know where that water came from..........[ ![]() Now, the emergency water sterilizer tablets sure sounds like a great idea. I need to look into those a little closer. You just never know. When I went there ones with my body , it was his first time. He hed camel back pack with water. However he did keep spiting the first gulp of water out on the ground. What a waste ! Something about the water was worm or something. Anyways, he did run out of water fast. We did have to cut the trip short because of not having a nuff water. That would be me and him. I used all of my four bottles. It was close to 100F that day. Anyways, I will look into those tablets. Peter [signature] Re: [peter805] Santa Ynez FF today - cpierce - 10-16-2009 The tablets are good if you don't trust things. Just be sure and follow the directions especially concerning the time you let it sit. I do a lot of backpacking so I use filters a lot. The filters have gotten a lot safer in recent years. You might check out the Seychelle site. http://www.seychelle.com/index.php They now filter out or kill just about everything including bacteria and viruses. Look at the Seychelle "Advanced" filters on the water bottles or in-line filters that fit on camelback. They even have "Straw" filters now. I really think that the cost is reasonable myself. Find what works for you and you feel comfortable with, but in that kind of heat I'd have some kind of backup plan. [signature] Re: [cpierce] Santa Ynez FF today - peter805 - 10-16-2009 Yes , thank you. I have been looking into filters and such. There are couple that I like but I need to do some more homework on it. No rush. Summer is over so I do have a little of time. But by next summer I will be ready. Once again , Thank you for your input. Peter [signature] |
