It's a fairly tough puncture resistant material, polyethylene. I have tried it on dead pike, but no live ones so far. On the mount, I couldn't feel the teeth come through, although I probably wasn't pressing as hard as a pike biting down. Even if you did have a pike bite down and felt the pain, you could still pull your thumb out of the Fishin' Finger before it got too uncomfortable. It should be good for less toothy and aggressive fish. However, we do make the disclaimer that you shouldn't try to lip sharks, barracuda or man-eating pirhana's![
