His garden looks great, sorry to hear yours isn't doing as well. One thing I do every year is, in the Fall, after the garden is done, I dig one foot down, put in a layer of leaves, put the dirt back over the leaves and let them decompose during the Winter. Then in the Spring, as soon as the ground thaws, I dig up the ground again and put in a layer of cow manure and cover it again with the dirt I took out. I've been doing this for over 40 years now and it works great.
