Using that info I would make a very uneducated guess that about 3000 to 4000
of the of the 85,000 Wipers stocked may have survived to what they are today.
70,000 .37 to .50 inchers.
15,000 1.50 to 1.93 inchers.
About 4%

That is a small lake for that many wipers but with a 20 ft depth it will likely mean that you will be able to catch them fairly easy. What has been your experience? Depending on how many people fish that lake and how many wipers are caught, those numbers could go down quick. Did they stock any wipers there last year?

No they have not put any in since July of 2012 I think.

Something to keep in mind- survival of stocked fry and fingerling varies considerably from year to year and water to water. That 30-40% survival of fingerlings mentioned earlier is the about as high as it gets and happens occasionally under optimal conditions. I’ve seen some mention on this forum that survival of fry is about 1% and fingerlings is 10%. These are probably good estimates of the median or average survival rates to expect over the long term, but they are only estimates and the actual survival numbers can be anywhere from 0.01% - 11% for fry and 1%-40% for fingerlings. Stockings of fish can also completely fail as well. As you can imagine, there are a lot of factors that can influence the success of fish stockings like food availability, available nursery habitat, predation by other fish, and weather or climate patterns.

What if it does help the small mouth population like they hope all the trout guys will be unhappy if it hurts the small mouths everyone is unhappy this was a loose loose I think but I’m not going to say it was good or bad because I’m not a biologist and I haven’t spent years studying this kind of stuff

Generally - it’s because they are sterile, and therefore easily controlled. The number they plant will drop, unless folks really bite at catching any, or they are all C&R followers, and good at releasing unharmed.
Smallmouth are prolific breeders, and hence - where they’ve been bucket-loaded and introduced - there are a number of lakes with a catch-n-kill mandate. Guess they could paint that target on the Wipers if they choose too.
Never heard of an angler getting a ticket for releasing a fish.
I thought it was strange when I first read about the plan but after talking to Chris Penne it makes sense. There are too many SM in EC, so thinning them out, is the way to go. If you think about it, if EC had been "left alone"in the first place there would be no SM in the lake because they were illegally introduced there.

It is VERY possible/probable that an introduction of wipers will alleviate the problem. Or it may not. I support the DWR on this. There are many lakes that have SM issues and if this works as planned I see them doing it to others that can handle it.
