*As I understand it, one reason that the State has had a problem with the wording for this issue, is Bass Tournaments.
The Bass Clubs have lobbied the State for years, to allow live well use during tournaments.
This is one reason that trout and salmon are mentioned but not bass or other fish, in regard to holding in possession.
Kent,
I agree that it’s time for Utah to make this clear!
*
Unfortunately, the way it is now it is up to the individual officer’s interpretation of the law and that is never a good situation, because of course they won’t all interpret it the same way.
sorry for the afero mentioned language but quitting is for (badword). look where your at!!! you are in utah ( you meaning everyone here). i have been to and seen the arm pit of hell, and it took my 10 years outside of the US to get to UT, not only for my brother but simply for the fishing!
anyway, there is no such thing as to much of a good thing fishing wise
FG, i’m curious of why you started this thread? And why the reference to the two fish limit on the Utah board?
im ussually pretty selective on the size and type i keep..lots of catch and release..have been guilty of miscounting when it comes to a nice mess of gills..but to my deffense i always make sure they all get eaten
The only time I keep a limit of trout is if I’m fishing Blacksmith Fork and I want some trout for dinner. I’ll keep my limit of small browns there since the DWR encourages it. Mostly I just keep panfish or small walleye if I’m keeping fish though. They make much better tacos.
In Utah, the bag and possession limits are the same. For example, once you’ve harvested a limit of trout you cannot harvest any more trout until you’ve consumed or donated at least some of the trout you’ve harvested. So, if you eat one trout, you can harvest one more the next day; if you eat a full limit, you can harvest a full limit the next day.
Doesn’t say you cannot continue to fish, only that you cannot harvest any more until you have consumed or donated some of the trout that you’ve harvested. The daily limit prohibits you from harvesting more than your limit in one day. Even if you eat them or donate them you cannot harvest more until the next day. Doesn’t mean you have to stop fishing though, just harvesting.
You may not fish at waters that have a specific bag or size limit if you possess fish in violation of that limit. For example, if the cutthroat trout limit at a river you’d like to fish is two cutthroats, and you harvested three cutthroats earlier that day at another water, you can’t fish at that river until you consume or donate at least one of the cutthroats you harvested earlier.
Doesn’t say you cannot continue to fish, only that you cannot have more than your limit in your possession. If the trout limit is 4, and you have 4 trout in your possession, then you have the exact limit. You cannot fish in waters that have a trout limit of say, two, because you would be in possession of two more than your limit at that water. But if you are fishing in a water that has a 4 trout limit, and you already have 4 trout, you’re not violating that 4 trout limit until you harvest another trout.
Any fish that doesn’t meet the size, bag or species rules for the water you’re fishing must be returned to the water immediately.
Means that if you catch a fish that you cannot keep because it would violate the limit for that size of fish, that species of fish, or the number of that type of fish in your possession that you have to release it. Ergo, you can continue to fish, just not harvest.
Maybe you need to learn how to read the proc!
I have read the proc. Many times. Show me where it says that I have to stop fishing when I have a limit in my possession. It doesn’t.
I stand corrected, it does not specifically state that you cannot continue to fish. But would’nt one risk being in violation of “wasting” if a fish was deeply hooked and unable to survive but is thrown in anyway “abandoned” because one had a limit already.
**
Wasting
***Utah Code § 23-20-8
*You may not waste any fish or crayfish or permit them to be wasted or spoiled. (Waste means to abandon a fish or crayfish or allow it to spoil or be used in a manner not normally associated with its beneficial use. For example, using the meat of game fish as fertilizer or for trapping bait is not considered a beneficial use of the meat.)
Unfortunately, the way it is now it is up to the individual officer’s interpretation of the law and that is never a good situation, because of course they won’t all interpret it the same way.Kent,
That’s not exactly true. The officer makes a decision to cite or not cite. However, the legality of the decision to cite is ALWAYS determined by a judge in a court. Most, but not all, citations end with a determination of guilty of breaking a law by the judge. But you will always have your day in court. It might be costly, but you will have it. [crazy]
Also, the proclamation is not the complete rule book. There is this statement from page 2 of the proclamation:
This guidebook is a proclamation of the Utah Wildlife Board. Please be aware that it’s only a summary of the rules and laws that govern Utah fishing. For an in-depth look at the state’s fishing regulations, visit Administrative Rules or the nearest Division office.
I don’t know if Utah law covers continued fishing after a limit is possessed or not and I don’t care to research it, but just because it’s not in the proclamation doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not in the law. So, let’s be careful out there. ![]()
I have no idea what the limits are as I don’t keep, and it was just a number I pulled out… what is the limit at Strawberry these days?[;)]
Or maybe I figure sub consciously that is plenty…LOL
As for the post, I admit, another post got me thinking about it and bored out of my mind with my back and stuck in the house.
So here I am on the computer and just thought I would ask
No motive really…no bad intents. Actually learned something as well, as I interpreted the law differently, as to quitting when limit reached.
I could have been more complete in my language, but we are on the same page.

Then if that’s the case, what about slot limit cutts? Undersized trout at Minersville? Bear Lake cutthroats at Bear Lake that have all of their fins intact, including their adipose fin? Rainbows or cutthroats at Huntington? You can’t legally keep any of the fish mentioned. They could be the only fish that you catch at that time, but you’re in violation of the limit if you keep it… deeply hooked or not. The list goes on and on. Almost every water that has a special regulation provides a catch 22. How about endangered species?
When I have had this discussion with the powers that be, I have always recommended that the law be written to allow fishing after possessing a limit to be in accordance with artificial flies and lures only regulations to facilitate safer release of fish. They don’t want to worry about it.
I usually don’t keep fish, if I did I would not stop fishing until I wanted to go home. Yeah, if your sitting there deeply hooking fish and throwing them back belly up to keep fishing, karma’s a beoch. If your just fishing for sport and doing your best to release fish unharmed, then your not in the wrong IMO.
I think that as long as you are reading the proc and abiding by it’s rules (however you read them) then you doing just fine. There’s probably tons of people that don’t even know what it says and may not even have a fishing liscence. I always feel like I do what is right by at least reading the proc and going from there.
I never worry about stopping my fishing before I’m ready because I havent kept a “limit” of any species of fish for the fry pan, or, cat food/rose bush fertilizer, for more than 20 years.

+1 If you are fishing for meat, thats your prize. You keep a limit and go home telling everyone you limited out! If you like to catch lots of fish you fish all day catch all day, keep on or two that float and you are done. We all agree so this thread is complete.
#1. Yes we all agree for the most part but, I wasnt replying to you..
#2. Who are you to decided when a thread is finished that you didnt start? Who died and made you boss??
- I never said you responded to me. I agreed with you and added my own thoughts
- No one made me the boss.
- Thanks for the personal jab about that.
I have seen many times when mods on this forum lock posts because they have run their course. A question is posed, answers are given, people take sides, the end. FG admitted that this thread was started because of other threads on catching fish. (mine) She included a reference to a limit that is not even one in our state. (Henrys two fish). Seems like a bit of pot stirring. This is exactally why I wrote the bogus Henrys thread, to lighten things up on this uptight forum. This thread about when to stop, how to fish, what not to do, why we should worry ourselves sick with catching 12 fish and letting them go, is not productive to the forum. Plain and simple.
From the rules.
It is once again time for a gentle reminder about the friendly atmosphere that, we here at BFT, would like to promote.
BFT is a family friendly place. One where people can come and enjoy discussion of their favorite activity.
As moderators, one of our responsibilities is to make sure that every person can do so without the need to feel like they have to defend themselves, or expect a response to a thread
Anyway I stated my opinion at the first of this and got drawn back in because I feel the underlying point of this thread is wrong. I am done posting on this thread and will let the rest of you duke it out. I’m going fishing tomorrow. ![]()
I try to C&R on most fish like trout bass perch walleye, but will keep one once in a wile…
I can’t remember the last time I did keep a limit…

WOW! I admitted no such thing. I said it got me thinking about DIFFERENT things. That is all. Nothing to do with you.
This has nothing to do with ice fishing, well maybe it does but I didn’t see that, I mean all fishing and the fact I don’t ice fish, more at open water fishing.
I don’t want to burst your bubble, but this was not directed at you or anyone else. The thought never occurred to me.
In fact the first response was “good subject”. I am a mod here and I do try to keep people posting. Granted not on this forum but the subject is all fishing not just tube or fly, so, I posted a question.
If you got the wrong vibes on this, that is a personal thing.
You see, you are making ME defend myself for something I had no intention of. I don’t work that way.
Yep, its probably best to go fishing and ignore this web site, and others, most of the time..
As far as a personal jab, its wasnt, but merely a question.
Hey, I like to stir the pot now and then, anytime, anywhere. I feel a need to see if folks are still breathing even though its been said I dont play well with others most of the time…
