Gotta go get my stickers for my sled …
I know right? Soon enough we will be drillin the hard deck
Because I can get to spots on lakes that I can’t hit during the rest of the year. I generally catch larger fish under the ice and I love my Vexilar!
+1 on the vex! Ice fishin with a flasher is like playing a video game. Video Games+ adult beverages= FUN"
This time of year WOW..what can I say..This is my FAVORITE thing to do. While I have many favorite things about Ice’n what stands out in my mind is the Ambiance of the surroundings you have at hand. From having a momma moose and three calves come across the ice within 50yards of us, as well as a bunch of deer doin their thing as if nobody was there to disturb them& the peaceful Eagles. But its just a start to enjoyin the Ice with the my wife and kids to my good friend and fellow BFT’r Northernfisher kickin it in the frabills roastin brats on the barby and enjoyin an adult beverage or a shot from the flask…Now that’ll warm ya up..lol These are my favorite things about Ice’n and i cant wait to spend the next few months livin in Gods country.
Watching my fishfinder go crazy, and then my pole headed for the hole.
Love ice fishing for quite a few things. I’m a winter guy, I LOVE the snow. It’s generally more peaceful. Less fishing pressure. Relaxing to sit on the ice, drill a hole and do my favorite thing in the world. Maybe having a drink or few with some good people. Makes me feel like a human. Away from everything and just enjoying life. I can’t wait for ice! So excited the temp is dropping like crazy.
Being out on the ice with people from the site. Also, I like the fact that it does not take a ton of gear or time to get ready and you can also take a large group with out things getting too crowded. Its great for kids as they can feel the bite and see it clearly, even if they cant cast in open water well they can still catch a ton of fish vertical jigging. Cant wait![fishin]
My favorite thing about ice fishing is staying home and getting caught up on all the things I pushed aside during the open water season.
For the crazy ice fishers out there I don’t think there is anything to dislike about it.
-The snow
-ice
-ice shack
-30 in poles catching multiple fish
-no power squadron
-staying warm in your shack while everyone thinks your freezing
-or just getting to those spots you normally can’t and being able to stay over your “honey hole” without the wind blowing you around.
I love winter and everything about ice fishing. Can’t wait for this season and all the catching up I am gonna be doing for missing out on last season. See you on the ice!
Getting to play the part of God.[angelic]
Let me explain. One day a little fish was swimming, minding his own business when he came upon a tasty little morsel. The fish go’s against all of his natural instincts and took the bait.
Suddenly the little fish felt a tremendous pain, a pain so great it felt like he was going to die. Try and fight as he might he felt himself being pulled towards a tunnel and bright light. At the end of the bright light, he see’s old family members laying on the ice. Then, a giant hand coming down from the heavens to gentle pick him up. This warm and loving hand removes the pain from his upper lip. Giving a kiss upon the face and saying it’s not your time little one, it’s just not your time. Then putting him back into the little fish’s world to become a much larger and wiser fish.
That’s what I love about ice fishing.
My daughter will go out on the ice with me! Setting up the tent drilling holes then the heater fired up and warmth and comfort! Cooking soups in the tent and catching a few fish on the shorty rods through the 8" hole! Not my favorite type of fishing but a good way to cure cabin fever!
You folks are awesome! Great feedback! Hard to nail the “voting” list down to specifics - and your comments have pointed to lots of that. So many reasons!
Sounds like the main theme is the social aspects of getting out on the ice with other folks and having a good 'ol time!
Have to disagree on some notes though - there’s still a Powersquadron out there. “Interesting” to “feel” the ice bounce as a quad passes by and watch the water bubble up your ice-hole as the sheet bounces.
Nothing like feeling a big CRACK check right underneath where you’re sitting to send your blood pumping. And hearing the ice “sing” - ah what a tune!
You’re welcome to guess where they’re from, if you can identify the main feature - you could win a prize!
Parting Shot - (not my photo - but it’s my favorite!)

And don’t forget how FREAKISHLY HUGE fish can be that come up from the ice! We’re talking SLABBOS! (this is Roghet’s creativity BTW)

If you fished Pineview more often in the mid summer you would know what I meant.
Still I am not a fan of the ATV’s and Snowmobiles but I must say a few ATV’ers have given me rides while on crutches and I was not complaining at all! I have actually been on crutches and ice fishing in 2002 and 2011 and both years people ocassionally helped a brother out. Can’t wait to try my skins/skis out on the ice this year at the biger lakes!
I wanted to add the screaming people that go “NOOOOO! I LOST THE S.O.B.!!!” Somehow voices/screams carry pretty far on the ice. Pretty funny stuff to hear.
my favorite thing about ice fishing is it keeps a large number of people off the rivers and on the lakes [;)]
Me and my father-in law was the first to get on the ice last year up at Woodruff. Two tracks out and two tracks in. This is what it’s all about! Plus the Cuts are awesome table fare out of there.
+1 about the rivers
That and a lot of my favorite lakes only get heavy pressure during the ice season. I’ll often have the whole reservoir to myself while out in my tube, but I’ll pass that same reservoir in the winter and it’s covered in little shanty towns.
The three B’s!
Buddies.
Big Un’s
Beer
I like ice fishing because I am better at it then boat/shore ect.
Ilove ice fishing partly because it gets my kids out for some quality time with me instead of sitting around playing video games all winter when there is less to do. I love being able to pull fish right from under my feet and the anticipation of my short pole bouncing when you least expect it. Listening to the ice move, enjoying the muffled quiet of a snow covered lake, not being at work, teaching my kids to respect nature and Gods creations, and watching the kids bomb down the hills on a sled when it’s slow. Talking with them with undivided attention and asking them about the important things of life while pulling in fat fish. It doesn’t get much better. I think I’ll go organize my tackle box now…
