Tricking out your ice sled

Will a sled cover fit over your rod holder. We use snowmobiles a bit and I like to have a cover over my sled to keep all the cold white stuff off my gear.

:sunglasses:Not over the “high profile” one. But it goes on and comes off easily…and lays flat in the sled. I usually do not set up the rod rack and rods until reaching the first spot on the ice if I am towing the sled behind power. And I always use a cover too.

Great ideas, great craftiness. Indeed TD is the king of PVC (next to the guy that makes those wind-walking machines!!!). I’ll have to look for the thin-walled type.

Here’s a couple other ideas. Ben has a rack on the back of his sled - similar style - he actually tends to leave the rods in the rack when he’s trecking. I added a similar rack to my plastic tub that I fill with waaaay too much stuff. (better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it - my curse!) It sits just outside my tent - come time to relocate - lift the whole thing in my sled/tent - rods and all, and shuffle on.
I put a couple ‘storage hanging bars’ on the other side - holds my auger off the ice, also the heater nestles in between perfectly for secure travel when packed.

I also saw a Youtube of a guy who made a rack out of a cardboard box. SO I had to try that. All those “electronics” boxes that SHOULD be thrown out, but aren’t. NOT good in wet snow I’ve learned!!! But semi-disposable, so whatever. Mix of carboard, foam for support, cello packing tape, and of course Gorilla Glue - the tie that binds.
For travel - I load the rods in the rack, and lay that on my bin flatways, and it zips into the tent for security. I have an ice-rod bag - made for two, I cram 4 in. But I like that Tennis rod bag idea. DI here I come! I think next one I’d like to mount the PVC stumps on a rod so they can rotate - I’d like the rods to angle towards the back so it’ll stand a bit steadier.

Didn’t get a photo, but Toadly has a nice setup. He’s mounted his sled up on skis, and mounted two milkcrates to the back to hold “accessories”. No tipover for buckets.

One more - I saw this online, and thought it looked simple, yet handy enuf. No PVC, but maybe a coathanger!

Yote nice collection of ideas. I thought I had decided how I was going to do it but you just added an option I hadn’t thought of. Since I have lots of nieces and nephews around I still need the sled for kids sliding from time to time so that container option might work the best for me at this juncture. I like the looks of the sled mount a little better but this may work better for me at this point. Thank you. Plus if I screw up it wont ruin my sled. Thanks J

I actually built the rack onto a 2x4, then mounted that to the bin. Helped to reinforce it with a matching wood board on the inside, was concerned I might rip bolts thru the plastic. But - with a couple wing bolts, you could make it mobile - if you take different setups on different trips.

Instead of all those noisy snow machines, what I really need is a set of THESE to add to the front of my sledge! THEN we’d be talking!

Ya I figured I’d cut a 2x4 into strips and match them on both sides. Figured I could vary the thickness to adjust for the angled sides of the container and make the rod holders vertical. Think I’ll try to set mine length wise so I can set the auger along the side and still fit in the sled. Well Merry Christmas to everyone. Later J

Having issue getting an in line attachment so see attached files, but it should have my icebox… I was home sick yesterday and got bored in my quarantine room so I grabbed a drill and saw and went to work, far from perferct, but it will work for me… Later J

What is it they say - feed a fever, starve a cold. Maybe PVC dust will help clear the congestion!
Looks good Jeff. See you’ve got some other toyz on board there too! Love those jiggers. How do you like those rods with the stand built in? I’ve looked at those (forget the brand name) and wondered if they’d work for me and my setup or not.

I really need to have a go at the PVC craft and put together a stand for my camera, and something to hold my fish-finder (assuming I yank it off the boat!). Or break down and get a Vex… I would like to have a stand to get the Mr Jigger up higher. Too much bending for this old back!

Hope you’re feeling better soon.

Glad terry quarintined you and youhad time to make your cooler almost as cool as mine! lol Sure loved fishing on thursday forthe lil bit we were out. At least we got a good laugh when andrew steped in hole that will be something to tell his friends when they get back to calli. Looks good

Thanks for the ideas sorry for the heavy infringements but I think it will work good for my need to be able to change things up. May give it a try on Hyrum tomorrow. The rods with the built in stands are great for trout but I’m not sold on panfish. They actually would be nice on bigger fish but since I can even catch little ones lately I don’t have any fresh brag stories but I liked them last winter. On fish finders I lucked out and got the finder before the boat so I rigged it mobile to work on float tube boat and ice fishing. This way I’ll hopefully learn how to use it. One feature I borrowed from one of the last posts was a wire rod holder I mounted on the lid of the container it is just the right height so I don’t have to bend over at all to pick up the pole. I hope this will help me hook the fish easier. Well thanks again to everyone for lots of great ideas. Later J

Hey thanks ya it’s a poor copy of perfection but you know how it goes for a red neck farm kid. Got to do the best you can with what ya got. Anyway hopefully one of these days well get to go fish as long as we want and maybe I’ll break this drought I got goen. Tired of being skunked again. But that was a cool Christmas present the name sticker for my boat. So now when people see me on the water they’ll know where to avoid if they want to catch fish. Later J

TD you are the wisdom on this site:) I would like more info or a link to the new ice ducer? I have mine attached to pvc (u shaped then a pipe going down). What did you use for the float? and could you explain the pvc on the ducer and the size factor. Thanks.

:sunglasses:In the post linked above there are pics showing the 'ducer setup in more detail. The basic idea is to use a piece of swim noodle foam for a float and then to have the weight of the ducer hold it in a mostly vertical position. You can use any kind of floating foam that will hold the weight of your 'ducer setup.

If you still have problems, shoot me a picture of what you have now and maybe I can make suggestions.

Ok J got bored today waiting for the Doc to call and so I decided to revamp my bucket. It know sports a spring loaded hook setter and that can be undone to make a verry sensitive bite indicator. Know all i need to do is try it and see if it works

What do you use for the trigger?

small wooden stick with a piece of line set to the line in the hole or it can be triggered by a remote control servo from an old rc airplane

Looks good Big G let me know how it works. Taking the cubs fish’en Saturday at Hyrum. If you have time run up and see if you can out fish a forth grader. Later J

I cannot even out spell a fourth grader. Hey when we planning for sisco I may have surgery in the next 3 weeks

I suspect cisco will run in the next ten days or so. I’m planning to try them next weekend. Don’t think well have ice again so get ready for your polar plunge. Hope the operation goes well. Keep in touch. Later J

Here’s my pimped out rig.

I purchased the smallest size Jet Sled, and built the rest. Here’s the stern showing the rod holders and open storage underneath where I throw my auger, scoop, spud bar, etc. Also I like to keep a line in the water at all times; hence the lower left rod holder for “dead-sticking” during lunch.

This is the starboard view where you can see the piano-hinged, semi-dry storage area beneath the cooler. The cooler is held in place via quick-release strap for transport but removes easily to double as a seat while jigging. The handle is made of PVC and makes pulling it quite comfortable even in deep snow.

Portside view showing the center-mounted Vexilar flasher and aft tackle storage box. The transducer cup swings outboard of the sled and has a large hole to allow water to drain off (and outside of the sled). The flasher is locked down through the eyebolt with a hand-tightened knob.

The structure is made out of 3/4” PVC pipe… light weight, very strong, very rigid, easily modified, and overall very easy to work with.

The decks are 1/2” plywood painted Petty blue (1970 Plymouth Superbird Petty blue to be exact) and fastened to the structure with thru-bolts and wing nuts.

The posts are thru-bolted to the sled with 1” facia board to take up the gap between the structure and the angled sled walls. I kept them up off the sled floor by about 1/8" - 1/4" for two reasons; first any water that gets into the tubing can drain out, and secondly to keep the posts from wearing through the floor of the sled.

My lantern case also straps to the rear uprights for night fishing. I don’t fish with tip-ups but they could easily strap to the rear uprights as well if needed.

It’s been in this current form for 6+ seasons now and has worked out for me very well. Compact, lightweight, and easy access to everything I need.
