Strawberry Power Squadron

You would have enjoyed the morning up at Strawberry today. 68 degree water and glassy through noon at least.

But no power squadron was in sight today.

56 fish came (and mostly went) this morning though.

We kept 2 rainbows, 1 Kokanee, and a near state record chub we caught (and will use as bait next trip).

WOW…would have been pretty tough for me to choose?
Ski or Fish,Fish or Ski…sounds like you had a great day no matter what …good job!

I am waiting for someone to do both  On two skis I can go pretty slow.
I guess I need to quit watching Top Hooker…LOL

By noon I was wishing I’d thrown the knee or wake board in to jump in, cool down, and end the great fishing day with a ride.

The lake was also pretty deserted today.

Y’all sound like a bunch of angry old white guys. It’s your lake, it’s your bar…

I was there all last week in he 100 degree heat and didn’t have a single problem with them other than the amount of beer they were willing to give in exchange for 4 lb rainbows. But I fish to chill and get away from the world, not wind myself up over non-issues.

I think most railing against the average power squadron driver are doing so from personal experiences.

And you guys don’t have much to complain about the power squadron up there. I went to Lake Pleasant, down here in AZ, about 3 weeks ago. Now mind you, Pleasant is a big body of water. It was crazy! [crazy] I’ve never seen boats go so fast, so close to each other. People just not looking running some super powerful boats. I mean the boats that you couldn’t get through Ogden Canyon to Pineview. Even have Sheriff’s boat cops out there. I redneck launched my little bass hunter ex got about 30 yards out and…nope. Back to shore as quick as my 8hp would take me, won’t lie, I was worried.

One big problem is that people don’t seem to think anymore about the consequences of their actions. Cruising past a fisherman in a small aluminum boat is quite dangerous for the fisherman. I have had a few times where I’ve literally had to hang on to both sides of my boat.
Others don’t know the dynamics of their wake. I had a few times where a boat came flying in at full speed, then cut off the throttle when they finally got close to me. This is often worse than flying by at full speed. The boat dives in, digs a big hole in the water, and throws a HUGE wake. Other times they would stay just UNDER plane speed (perhaps thinking they were being courteous??) until they got past me. This throws a MUCH bigger wake than if they were fully planed out!
Please keep in mind the 150 foot rule, including if you are going through the narrows. It doesn’t matter what part of a lake you are in. If it is within 150, you are breaking the law and putting others in danger.
One final point to make - If you are within that 150 foot range, you are also financially liable for any damages or loss. You might think “oh, it’s just a little old aluminum boat, can’t cost that much”. You wouldn’t like the pricetag for all of the gear in my monstrous tackle bag, my expensive rods and reels that may go over if you capsize me, and then there are any medical issues if me or any of my kids are hurt.

We should propose an amendment to this law - If a boater violates the 150’ rule, other boaters endangered by this should have the right to paintball the violator as they go by… Just sayin’…

The only thing I don’t understand about skiing at the Berry is… The leeches. A couple of years back my buddy and I were fishing in mid July and finally decided that it was too hot to fish, and went swimming instead. After about 15 minutes we both got out and noticed we were COVERED with leeches.

Ya. You guys can ski all you want, but I think I’ll pass.

I am an angry old white guy. Got a problem with that?
And giving away my 4 lb. rainbows?
Sorry but you’re 86’d.

After spending the last several days getting zoomed past by very large and relatively fast boats at the gorge I’m thankful I’m in a deep v hull. The answer to this seems obvious to me. The State needs to budget money to hire enforcement for these offenses. I would bet the word will spread fast when they start getting tickets. Hundreds a day could be written at The Gorge alone on busy weekends. How there is not more accidents here I have no idea. Sit outside hideout for an afternoon and watch the danger happen.

A couple weeks ago I was up at pineview, by the north shore by eden. I was out in my yak drop shotting and a boat and skier went between me and the shore no more than a 60’ distance. I was able to get my bow around just in time to have my bow dive in the second wave. I guess when you are cruising in the water you cant see a kayak with a big bft flag 6’ off the water. It was great fishing though.

When it gets real scary is having a water skier in the water (average rope of 75’ long) and the bright orange flag up, only to have a boat CUT the rope by going between your boat and skier in the water. Happened to me at Echo and Pineview.

Two times? That’s insane, did you turn them in? I honestly don’t know how I would handle that, I get pretty ticked when they go zooming past me full throttle when I’m trolling let alone if I was pulling a skier.

Absolutely turned them in. That was a few years ago, but I am betting it is even worse these days.
