Strawberry 9/8

Yes, that is where we were. Sounds like you were a ways to the south of us. We were a little bit north of Kents boat and his crew. I’m not sure if we were right on top of a channel or not, but there is something there that makes the fish keep coming around. About 3 weeks ago we were anchored in that general vicinity and there was in fact a pretty strong underwater current for about an hour or so. Our anchor kept us put and there was no wind at, in fact it was kind of eerie. Our lines were almost at a 45 degree angle towards the west. During that hour the fishing was about the best I’ve ever seen there. Then the current stopped and our lines went vertical again and the fishing, although still good, slowed down somewhat. So you may be correct about a channel being there somewhere.
It’s the same place we were ice fishing last winter when we talked to you as we were coming in after my cousin landed that 28incher. I had never fished it from a boat before this year, only ice fished from that spot. It may very well be an old underwater channel.

We started fishing there because we can launch the little boat right from the shore and be fishing within about 5 minutes. I noticed that the water has gone down some since 2 weeks ago. Where it used to be 35ish feet, it is now 33ish feet. I’ve got quite a few spots marked around there, but we generally just drive out to that area and then idle around with the trolling motor till we see fish and then anchor, so we are never in the exact same spot, but lately we’ve been in that general vicinity every week.

I can’t get enough of that place!

Randy

I think it’s just Randy’s boat. We fished using the same things and only about 100 feet away and couldn’t buy a bite. We did end up with 6 fish between the 3 of us but only two of us caught those fish and my father in law was skunked. We couldn’t believe it that everyone around us was catching fish and we couldn’t get any. Oh well there is always next time.

Hey flyfish4life,

Like MGB said, it location, location, location that can make a big difference.

Don’t worry about the numbers of fish. When I tried jigging some years ago, I spent the better part of 12 hours on my first day and only got 3 fish for my effort. I almost gave up on it as a lost cause.

But after doing it again and again, and with some great pointers from MGB and a few others, I was able to fine tune my jigging to the point that it is now one of my favorite fishing methods.

AAAUGGHHHH, I am so mad! I didn’t take you up on the offer because I was supposed to have a sitter and get to go fishing then what happens. The sitter falls through and family shows up for dinner and no fishing for me. To top it off you guys had a great day that I passed on ARRGGGHHH!!! [pirate]:angry::astonished::astonished: Luckily I do get to go out the next two weekends to make up for it. Nice job on the jigging at the berry I would love to try it sometime.

Yeah fishhound, I was a little dissapointed because I had taken my father in law and brother in law and told them how I had the right ideas this time and we were doing everything everybody else was we just weren’t in the right location. We need to get a better fish finder. Like I said, Oh well there is always next week.

SO DID ANY OF YA SEEN ANY KOKES CAUGHT? OR AT THE CLEANING STAITIONS. SHOULD BE RED AND RUNNING BY NOW. WEIRD YR WITH NOT 1 KOKE REPORT IN OVER 2 MONTHS.???

I was on Kent’s boat as well and had a blast. This was my first time jigging and thanks to the pointers from kent and fishhound I was able to get the hang of things pretty quick. Thanks Guys that was a ton of fun, hope to do it again sometime!

It seems that the flaming gorge might be a better location for catching Kokes ,i havnt seen or heard of good numbers for kokanee
out of strawberry.I know there in there but they are hard to catch.I dont know all the secrets but read the gorge reports and picts.

I was up there in my tube looking for those kokes, but never found them. They are starting to spawn but I think the majority of them are late. I don’t know much about them, but there are less then fifty in the trap and none in the rivers.

If anyone finds them please send me a pm would ya. I have never caught them when they turn color.[unsure] I would love to add that to my list of fish caught.
