steelhead flies

Yes I did. I guess it probably works at times. otherwise it would have gone bye, bye. Hey there FGD have you tried that mickey mouse fly yet? If anyone can catch fish on it it would be you.

hey now .. I resemble part of that remark.. just not gonna say which part..

MacFly :sunglasses:

I have, if you are talking the foam mouse.

This is what jigs was making reference to:

In that case NO.

Probably they’re using a Daiichi 1120 maybe in a size 20 to resemble a nymph.

nope thats not the one, they actualy take a small red bead or whatever colour they want and put it 4 inches up there line. Then they take a tooth pick and break off inside the bead. So it wont slide or move. Then down 4 inches they have a bare hook nothing on it. So when the steelhead or salmon hits the bead and you jerk, you hook the fish in the bottom of the mouth. I believe they may hook them better sense the bottom of there mouth is softer and fleshier. I will see if i can find a picture of it.

ok i found it, From what i read it looks like this was orginaly a fly fishermans way to fish for steelhead. here is a link, the only link i could find.

I saw a few setups along the banksthat looked like that

i know a couple guys who went up to orifino earlier this year and he said thats what everyone was using. The ppl you saw were they bottom bouncing or bobber fishing?

there was more people with bobber setups. I got mine bouncing and a bunch were FFishing I just have to justify buying a FF setup I only go once a year in feb looks fun

Sort of like snagging one’s catch.

ya when i was looking for that site there were alot of forums of ppl arguing over weather its fishing or snagging. I would guesse if its only 2 inches above the hook. the hook would either be in or close to there mouth. But i think they are more likly to hook themselves with it. probly on the outside of there mouth.

One could hardly call it fly fishing. Nor would I ever consider it as something that I would do.

i just cant believe they actualy catch fish on it, i would think that a fly would work alot better, but it must work cause they use it. The forums were also saying that on most fly fishing streams that its outlawed and not considered a fly.

I am betting that is how most Steelhead are caught, specially in Alaska. I wouldn’t think it is illegal at all. In fact in one of the newer magazines I got, there is an article about a HOOKLESS nymph, which is basically the same set-up. Suspend a Circle Hook and it is suppose to be great!

Okay, I found the article and there is a little video. Pretty cool idea.
It is like the egg up from the hook, but apparently there is a reason:

that video makes it look alot less like snagging. reminds me of the keyineye twitch. I am sure i spelled that wrong lmao.

If you want some terrific flies for steelies that are very easy to tie you should consider tying egg style flies. They are used to represent the fish eggs of salmonoids that steelhead just love to eat. They are usually constructed from various colors of multi strand yarn called “Glo Bug” yarn. However they are also made from chenille, Krystal Flash, and various colors of wool. They are pretty simple to tie and after a few tries you should be able to make one in less than five minutes. Here is a picture of my egg fly box.
