Running the gamut at Newton

They planted fingerling cats in there this spring, hope the tigers didn’t get’em all.

Wow, did they now back in the day when the catfish were still in there it was fun landing several big ones a night.

From what i hear, the farmers are gonna drain that place. This scenario is just like the time when the big die off happened. I was there Saturday and from the looks of it, it’s got a few more feet to go then i think a repeat of the die off will happen again.. From the fish i caught, they were looking like they had nothing in their stomachs.
I didn’t get into any crappies though. Mind telling me where you catching them at??

I caught the crappie in the same places I caught the perch and the bluegills. I was mainly fishing in 10-15 of water for the perch. Most of the bass I caught casting to the shoreline. I did catch some crappie around the dam but I can’t tell you where I was out the other times because to me, the areas I fished were non specific (out from the shoreline). First time on open water there so don’t know if there are certain landmarks around the lake.

I wasn’t using a fish finder so I typically found the schools of crappie by luck. When I dropped down to the perch I would occasionally catch a crappie higher up in the water column. When I found one, I would catch a bunch in a row.

Did you hold the camera with your feet?

I made a PVC swivel camera mount that inserts into a scotty rod holder base. It is at an angle so it swings out away from me and has a camera mount at the top. The problem is that if I made it so that it could swing out farhter away from me, it would make the camera sit to high. It works great as long as you don’t catch this size of fish.

By the way, thanks for the tips Yote.

I saw some fingerling TMs back in spring, but the stocking report doesn’t show cats. But I’d be glad to hear it.

Really wonder - if they are going to fix the ramp, how low will they need to drain it?
And if the Tigers are gonna go belly up - that would be a real sad thing. Hopefully they can manage something better.

I’ve mostly run into Crappie at the mid-upper part of the lake. But - I’ve not really tried for them in the deeper sections - guess if you graphed suspended fish - good chance.

I could be confused on which one they planted, I was probably wishful thinking on my part. I could of swore I read somewhere that they planted channel cats.

Check the stocking report for last year. 3000 channels were stocked if i remember right. And yes the lake got real low back in 01 and 02 or 02 and 03. Cant seem to get my remembery going. When it did though, the fish and game lifted all restrictions. From what i’ve heard the local farmers and the fish n game came to an agreement on what they can take to prevent this in the future. 1/3 pool is what i was told. Plus i heard about ramp repair this year too so…

Thanks - I see that now. Hmm - 4 inchers… ever a good sized perch could chow down on one of them!

So that explains the chicken liver packages I’ve seen left strewn along shore.

Here’s something to chew on. My friend who fishes out there was talking to a fish and game cop out there. He said he heard this, then asked the cop, and he confirmed it. Starting next year, the rumor is you can use whole perch. Or as I took it, the cut bait restriction on size will be lifted.

Man thanks, I knew I wasn’t crazy, well not completely. My memory aint what it used to be. Last spring last fall that’s not to far apart to a guy my age.
