Spent a little time chasing mulies this past week. It has been probably around 8 years since I last harvested a deer. The devastating winter a few years ago in Northern Utah has made for some tough hunting. But I was able to find a decent buck this year and put my old legs to the test in packing it out. Congrats, how far of the road did you have to hike to get that buck? Been a while since ive shot a buck but I don’t put in the kind of effect you did this year. Were you able to get it all out in one day? ---

I was probably about a mile and a half off the road. I just wasn’t seeing anything closer to the to the road. There were a lot of Road Hunters and of course being public land there’s been a lot of people up there. But the good thing was that I saw a lot of deer and several bucks. This was the biggest one that I saw so I just didn’t pass on the opportunity. I shot it in the morning on Tuesday, returned in the afternoon and did the deboning, then packed out half the deer that evening. Then returned the next day for the rest of the deer. ---

Did you hang the deer after leaving it overnight? When I got my desert bighorn that is what I did, after quartering it but I was concern a predator would find it before I got back. ---

I did not hang it. I take a small tarp with me to keep the carcass off the ground when skinning/deboning, then bags for the meat. I just wrapped the meat for the second trip in the tarp and moved it away from the carcass. I really wasn’t too concerned that something would get into it. There were quite a few coyotes howling at night and in the morning, but when I returned, nothing had touched anything. ---

Good deal, it likely takes a few days for predators to find a kill like that but I wasn’t sure, so I took no chances. If a cougar would have found it, there would be no issues for it to climb a tree but I was counting on it taking a few days to even find it and like you, I moved the meat away from the kill site. Glad it all worked out. ---

Nice buck, what unit were you hunting this year? I did the Cache with the open sights deal… kind of fun hunt, went out three times and seen a buck each day… Nothing like yours or I would have been shooting… Took one hunt that I thought I’d aged out on, but turned out to be a good trip and nice to prove to myself I’m not too old yet… Later J ---
