How I Maintain My Reels Between Full Services!

Trying not to take apart my reels as it’s time consuming. Since all my equipment is new (within 2yr) i just have to maintain my lubing. During the “stay-at-home” Pandemic orders i re-spooled & re-greased all my reels. Now if you bought any reels “used” expect to put in more maintenance time into your gear.

In this video i’m lubing my Okuma Tesoro12 Star-Drag Conventional Reel. It casts easy & is close to my Torium (though it can cast farther & easier then my Toriums). I’ve let some of my friends try casting this reel like Dusten & Joshua. They were amazed at how easily it cast, the distance they got & how light it was.

Just remember to occasionally lube your reels when you have the time. It’ll lessen those time consuming & costly full maintenance drop-offs.

Do you know the amps your plug is rated for? Are you using lithium or lead acid batteries?

If you’re using lithium and your plug is rated for less than 70 amps it might be cutting off when the power on the motor gets above 7-8 for too long. I had a similar problem with my Ulterra. The plug was a 40 amp plug and it kept cutting out and I would have to restart. I did a little research and switched a 70 amp plug and have not had a problem since.

Here is what I am using

Marinco 12VCPS3 70A Trolling Motor Plug & Receptacle

Sorry for some reason I can’t figure out how to add the link to Amazon, but if you search the above in Amazon it should come up.

> Thanks for the info . Haven’t had the boat long , it has maintenance free lead acid . I have to assume it’s been set up properly being it’s been in the boat with the previous owner for nearly 4 years . But who knows , I will be checking everything I know to check .

I had the same issue. It ended up that one of the batteries was bad. Once I replaced the bad one, everything worked. Hope you get it figured out. Good luck!

I would be very suspicious of the batteries if they are 4 years old. My Terrova did the same thing in October and one of the batteries was totally shorted out. I’d start there. My experience with lead acid deep cycle batteries is that 4 years is getting to the end of their life. AGM maybe a little longer but start with your batteries. I upgraded to lithium and am very glad I did.

> ALso, if one battery is bad it is highly recommended to replace both at the same time. Replacing one might work for a while but problems will likely return before long.

I’m not an expert on batteries, but my experience is you must pull them and test them separately. When they are connected, they are going to balance. The lithiums are getting a little bit more expensive on Amazon. But still the way to go in my opinion.

>
> Thanks . Yes definitely replace both .I do the same with the two in my diesel truck . The MinnKota is 4 years old ,those two batteries are not quite 2 years old one is 4/24 the other 2/24 . I’ll get them load tested to start , and go from there . It appears lithium is in my future . Does it hold true with lithium also , I have a two year old 100 amp lithium bought to run my electric motor for my pontoon boat , hasn’t been used but twice . Just been sitting in my garage . Could I buy another one same brand from Amazon ,and put both in my boat ? Or would this older lithium drag down the new one ? Then I would have to get another charger for the boat ,that would charge lithium .

I went to lithium last year and wow what a difference. So much lighter and hold a charge a lot longer than the deep cycles I had before. You won’t regret it. I’m not sure about mixing and matching different brands of lithium. When one of my deep cycle batteries went bad and caused my Terrova issues, I replaced them both.

The one I have for my pontoon boat is a 100 amp Weize , what little I did use it , it seemed to do the job well , and yes it was nice dealing with a lighter battery , off ,and on the pontoon boat . After checking about lithium , it’s pretty much the same case as lead acid . Make sure you have done the calibration step on the motor I had an issue with my new boat last year. Worked good on std but went a bit crazy on tracking and I pilot untill it did the calibration set up.
Also my gps puck doesn’t power unless I turn on the accessories switch at dash . That’s was messing things up. Motor is 24 volt, the gps puck is 12 volt so it get power seperate from motor.

\*\*\*One other note on brushed 24 volt motors it is recommended to NOT run motor above power 8 for extended periods of time when using lithium batteries.

Owners manuals and motor websites mention to not run at max power for extended periods of time, on brushed motors . Newer models are now Brushless motors. .
Others have said no problem I don’t run mine above power 8 to be safe.
I have used my 12 volt 50 lb thrust electric motor many times at full power with lithium no
Problems yet? I think it may be more of an issue with the 24 volts systems since lithiums are putting out closer to 26 volts than 24 like lead acid batteries.

> I have a MinnKota 50 that I run on my pontoon boat with a 100 amp lithium battery , have never had any problem with it , running full power . This Terrova 80 that’s on the boat , according to the serial number it’s a 2022 motor, so it has the brushes . According to google the brushless was not introduced until 2023 it was called Quest on the Terrova
>
> As said I will make sure these two lead acid I have are fully charged ,I will get them load tested to start . I am hoping the issues are the batteries , but it will still be a bit expensive either way repairing the motor or getting set up with lithium ,and a new charging system . I know from past years owning ski boats it was a bit rough on the wallet . 😃 Sure sounds like lithium is a popular way to go . From what little I have used this Terrova , couple trips so far . We were trolling with flies at anywhere from 1 mph to 1.5 I am not sure what number it was running at on when running 1.5 1.6 which is the fasted we wanted . I am thinking it was around 7 or 8 on the remote at 1.5 . I will pay a little more attention to all this ,especially if I go to lithium . First I got to get it figured out why this Terrova will run okay on manual ,but not on AutoPilot. Also if the spot lock is working . I will be using that a lot in the summer for chironomid fishing , need to anchor up for that .

Check the calibration for initial set up. If the motor is new you need to do that once to make all the features work. Google or look in owners Manual. I had the problem with my new Terrova last spring when I bought my new boat. Doing the initial calibration procedure fixed everything.
You have to turn the boat in two complete circles etc.., look it up if you have not done it that could be the problem,
Also if you were only trolling 1.5 or so you probably were not higher than power 5 maybe 6 on my 18 foot Crestliner I can troll for kokes on power 5 if not windy.
