If everyone was using two rods it would put more pressure on many of the waters. Bank fishers that use two rods are usually using bait of some kind on the one that is sitting. Which means more harvest or more moralities of small fish that have been gut hooked. Either way an increased pressure on the fishery.
I don’t believe the number of poles increases fishing pressure. Isn’t that controlled by the harvest limit? The number of fishermen would likely be the increase or decrease on pressure at any location.
I use two poles, and if the fish aren’t biting, they still aren’t biting. If they are, I just get my limit a little quicker. As far as mortality rates, I really think that is unchanged. The unsportsmanlike conduct of fisherman releasing a fish that obviously isn’t going to survive happens regardless of number of poles used. I have been using the circle hooks and I can tell you the release is much easier. So, far, I have not had a gut-hooked fish using them. [sly]
Perchalong, I AM FROM IDAHO, and I do plan on coming back. This question was sent to me in a pm FROM an Idahoan.
It was a good question in my eyes and a few saw it that way as well, sorry you didn’t but easy fix, don’t read it.
I have talked extensively with Dan Garren (fishing manager) and been getting some great information, specially about Henry’s.
Again, I plan on moving back to Idaho and I still would like a 365 day license, so I keep asking Idaho F&G for it, just like the Ice Fishers asking for Henry’s to stay open longer…and they did.
I am saying if you don’t understand something, you ask questions, if you don’t like the answer you seek change.
And for the record, I have mentioned the 365 day “three or four” times starting in 2009, any more than that was not me. So, I am not alone on that either.
Phission, you are right on with a limit one can only take that limit. But, my thought on this, and confirmed by Dan, people don’t keep fish. So those 30 or so HOOKED days where all are released, they still suffer the same mortality as those kept. Add to that, larger trophy size fish.
To make up for this, more fish are planted, but they are not free.
Thank those of you that took an interest in this topic and had some good answers. Food for thought.
So help me understand what you mean by
[So those 30 or so HOOKED days where all are released, they still suffer the same mortality as those kept. Add to that, larger trophy size fish/quote]? Sounds like you are inferring that all released fish die?
I am also curious as to how F&G establishes a mortality rate. Do you have info from Dan on this?
I don’t fish Danials and probably never will . But why can I fish two poles in open water if I have a two pole permit . But I can only use one ice fishing ? Curt G.
I think it has a lot to do with how close you are to your rod. In the summer on Daniels if you are fishing with two rods you are probably in a boat trolling with lures or flies. The hook set will be quick and it will usually be somewhere in the mouth. Not that many shore fishing and no bait anyway.
Ice fishing the rods may be more spread out and possibly a deeper hookset. On a catch and release situation, I think it is better to have your rod right there in your hand or close to you. Mostly though, I think they didn’t want a full five rods. So since they needed to change it from that, they went for a single rod rule.

I am NOT saying they all die, but any caught fish mortality is at stake. It is a blood sport. That is to be expected. Why they plant more.
I do think larger fish are more at risk.
You are right in that some unsportsmanlike conduct will happen either way.
The more I have read on circle hooks, the more impressed I am by how well they work. Unfortunately not all bait is fished with circle hooks. Maybe someday they will have regulations on some waters for " flies, lures, or bait with circle hooks". Where as now the waters that have special regulations don’t allow anything beyond lures and flies. Interesting thought anyway.
Unfortunately I can imagine problems with an open two rod rule. Those groups that come in with extra kids and others that aren’t fishing, and still take limits for everyone in the group will have an easier time to harvest their “limits”. With a quicker limit, they may even return again. These are the types that aren’t likely to purchase extra rod licenses for everyone.
It will also be harder for enforcement to identify those that are doing that, if there are extra “not in hand” rods for everyone. “Party” fishing in a big way.
I still think it will increase the mortality on the smaller fish that are caught and then released. Not all fish that are caught on bait die on release, but there are enough more that fisheries across the nation rule against bait on waters where there are special release regulations.
i find it interesting as well. seems like five poles at least one would be unitended which is illegal. you can only fight one fish at a time.i pay for a two pole permit. maybe time for a ice fishing permit ???[:p]
i have recieved only one f &g ticket in my life. it was on map rock road. i was catfishing , had my chase lounger out next to my rod in the water, had a couple of beers soaked in the sunlight and accidently fell asleap. the wardon came apon me and gave me a ticket for unatended fishing rod. he told me if i was ontop of the rimrock at the canyon rim watching my rod with field glasses he couldn’t cite me. but he could sleeping next to it. still irks me
and i agree with cpierce i see1 guy watching 8-12 rods bank fishing with his kids . it is common. rods are being unatended.
also note that some of the folks criticize others for poor fish handling but post pics of big trout drug accross the ice/snow, handled for 30-40 seconds then get thrown back down the hole. i would bet most swim a few feet and then go belly up under the ice shelf.
I would just like to remind every body to keep it civil.
I was sitting at work yesterday thinking about this thread a lot and i think a came up with a logical reason for the fish and game charging for two pole permits on soft water and not for ice fishing.
A couple years ago fish and game did away with over the counter archery only pronghorn tags. the reason being is they were selling tons of tags and people were killing a bunch of antelope. it was starting to have a small effect on pronghorn populations so they switched the hunts over to draw only with unlimited tags. they did this as to try and deter some people from buying the tags. two ways it worked people now had to pay an extra 6.50 to get a pronghorn tag and had to go threw the process of applying for the hunt. it worked and instead of putting caps on the number of tags sold they were still able to keep a good number of tags out there for hunters.
this is what im getting at. aside from revenue the reason they make you buy two pole permit could be to keep so many people from fishing with two poles. imagine during the chinook run if every body and their brother were aloud to fish with five poles from the bank taking up entire stretches of river or somebody fishing off a popular boat dock that many people fish for crappie with five rods cutting other fisherman and women from accessing the spot. the problems this would cause would be ridiculous. fist fights and complaints galore. ice fishing you wouldn’t have this problem near as much because you are fishing straight up and down and when the ice is good you have access to a lot more area. soft water bank fisherman are limited to where they can fish and sometime end up fishing close together.
even with just allowing two poles for every body could get messy. so by charging it thins out the number of people who are going to do it. just a thought and it seems to be logical to me.
Was looking at that very thing a while back. This is what I found. Some of the numbers are not completely accurate as they were too complicated to list with simple numbers so I simplified them myself (dumbed them down, if you will). For instance, Missouri (I think) was allowed to have up to 30 hooks, but didn’t specify the number of lines if I remember correctly.

Here is a direct quote from F&G regs: **[#25418f][#25418f]
Attendance of Fishing Gear: **[/#25418f][/#25418f]You must attend to your fishing
gear while fishing. This means being able to watch your rod at
all times and be able to react to a potential strike.
Local F&G told me if you need field glasses to see your pole, You are not in proximity and will be issued a citation.
I have never been in a situation where my use of two poles has been interferring with another fisherman. Heck, most the time I could use 10 and not interfer. However, my ability to react to that many lines from the shore would be extremely stretched. With two I keep them with a step or two proximity. On the ice, where the line is straight down, five is possible. I set mine in a semi-circle so I can seel all four at once, and don’t have to kill myself to get to a rod getting a strike.
Nice list Buggy, but I had to look up the Utah-6. Flaming Gorge, all others two pole. Montana 2 pole, Wy. 2 pole except 21 lakes allow up to 6.
Interesting info all. Thanks, this has been great for the most part.
This is going to show my age . I can remember when there was no limit on how many rods you could use in Idaho . Some people would put out 50 tip ups . I am surprized there are not alot more tickets for unattended rods . When the weather is bad I have several rods outside my shanty and jig from inside with one . My rods have bells on the end and I can hear most bites and respond when I hear them . Curt G.
If by default we all were allowed to fish 5 poles on softwater, it would be a mess…could you imagine Henry’s opening day and everyone setting out 5 poles!
And you think it couldn’t get any crazier then it is now…
On the hard deck you have more room to go out setup accessing the iced over lake surface area, and your line shouldnt interfere with others(staight down, no drifting)…assuming you arent fishing too close to another hole…
