are we really comparing mammals (humans, elk, deer) to fish?
You guys have all watched Disney shows too many times. Talk about anthropomorphism.
We were taught to break the fish’s neck, as opposed to clubbing. We jut put our finger on the roof of the mouth and pull straight back. That always seemed to prevent them from flipping and flopping, and reduced any blood splatter.
What makes mammals superior to fish(because humans are one?)? Everyone likes dolphins for whatever reason and I’m more than positive almost no one would be okay with someone fishing for dolphins and keeping it alive till they left. Dude it’s not called anthropomorphism it’s called having respect for what you do. Let’s be honest, not one person on this board truly needs to keep their fish for survival like other animals because we have other food sources. The least we could be is be respectful and as humane as possible about it.

I say kill em’ quick or let em’ go. I just let them go. I actually think C&R is probably less humane than just killing fish, but I don’t eat them anymore so off they go.
Okay lol i’ll admit i’m pretty embarrassed that I didn’t know dolphins were classified as mammals. So scientifically dolphins are classified as mammals but most people think of dolphin as a fish. I’m not sure what you’re confused about but I’ll try to explain. I compared keeping a fish alive until you take it home with a hunter who purposely shoots something in a non fatal region on purpose. It’s just a jerk move to do. PBH said something to the effect of how can you compare mammals to fish and that’s where I questioned why mammals were considered superior to fish and mistakenly tried to used the dolphin example. We all can get food from multiple places so I’m saying we don’t need to kill fish for food like other animals, so the least we could do is be respectable about doing so.
I don’t think letting a fish go(unless it is bleeding profusely) is less humane than killing it but I agree with you that you should either instantly let it go or instantly kill it.

I think we can just end this discussion with the quote above. yikes.
dude…if you are worried about being humane, don’t fish. In fact, you would be better off just buying a fish aquarium.
We can have respect for what we do by worrying about conservation of the sport, the species, and the habitat. Let’s not get caught up in worrying about how we shouldn’t make the poor little fishies suffer! Heck, fishing will make them suffer…!
Yup cause it takes so much effort to bring a small cooler with a little ice and to smash the fish with a rock or something and put it in the cooler.[angelic]
I’m done talking about this, people can do what they want to do. Hope those like the ones on this thread who committed an illegal act get caught next time.
+1 on killing them quick. Cut the gills and put them on ice. I always have the best results doing that for flavor, although i do try to keep them from freezing if I am going to eat them fresh, which is usually the case
Yeah let’s direct the efforts of our already depleted DWR to inspecting whether the fish are still breathing or not during transport…forget about snagging, or over limits, poaching, fishing without a license…it’s so damn funny to see a liberal squabble when they don’t hear what they want…I said I like to keep em alive. Maybe I should have clarified that’s while I’m fishing…once I leave yes they are dead but you always get that one with nerves flopping around during cleaning time…The fundamentals of this thread are how does a MAN kill fish after their caught…answer…like a MAN.
Generally speaking, fish do not physiologically have the pain feeling “structures” found in higher animals. This is believed to prevent them from “feeling” pain like birds and mammals. They, no doubt, feel negative stimuli - thus their desire to flee when hooked but its not thought of as pain as we feel it. Along that same vein, if fish felt pain like we feel pain, then they would certainly eat fewer crawdads and spiny fish. [;)]
As for catch and keep; I, like many have stated, prefer to bleed them out immediately as I feel it keeps the meat better by not having blood flush the tissues with lactic acid and other toxins (TubeDude wrote of this in another thread). My own aesthetic also prefers to kill them immediately when possible.
Good on you for thinking larger than yourself and about what impact your actions have on the larger world.
Interesting thread for sure. I only fish, I don’t have it in me to be a hunter, I’m just not comfortable with killing a warm blooded animal and watching it die. I understand it has to be done by someone or there wouldn’t be any meat but for some reason, something deep inside me sides with prey animals rather than predators.
With that said, I feel no hesitation to kill a fish though LOL. A fish subjectively to me, just doesn’t function mentally in any way similar to how we function. Their notion of pain isn’t on the same level as we would feel with a hook in our lips. Any warm blooded animal such as birds and mammals feel pain on a similar level to us. But cold blooded animals are another story. I won’t go as far as that fish feel no pain at all, just not on the same level. Eventually we have to kill certain things……plants, flies, spiders…….I haaaate spiders! But anyhow yeah, I wouldn’t worry about a humane way to kill fish.
Here’s what I do. In cold weather like now I throw the fish into a bucket and it’s dead by the time I’m ready to fillet and still fresh. In summer I throw them into a cooler of ice where they meet their demise. On the ice I just pile them on the ice and they thrash till not moving or frozen partially.
There is one thing I don’t feel good about is when people kill carp and throw them on the banks. Or smash their heads with a rock. Seems ultra violent to me. If I don’t plan on eating a fish, I release it. Yes, I understand they are trash fish but I just don’t feel right about killing anything and not using it.
I’ve been to a lot of different places and observed a lot of different methods on taking care of fish after they are caught. The number ONE by far and wide is catch the fish and then slit the gills so it bleeds out and put it immediately on ice. It leads to less bruising of the meat (no blood to cause a bruise) especially on whitefish. Also, leads to a quick, humane death. End of story.
