Thanks Greg, Nice to know I’m not alone in having to branch out of what has always worked for me before… I’m surprised you haven’t caught more eyes fishing Oneida, we only fished it for a couple days during scout camp, but picked up some eyes.. However, we were probably fishing more for eyes than you do… I expect you pick them up while fishing for smallies, where we picked up smallies fishing for eyes… We were fishing crawler harnesses on the bottom, not pulling cranks… Plus you probably fish the rocks and we were fishing the flats…
It also might be something to do with expectations, you have nailed some huge bass in the last couple years and I’ve had some big number days and I think I get to expect to have a big day and get disappointed when I don’t… Instead I should realize that those big days are special and shouldn’t be expected but appreciated when they happen… Don’t think I’m enjoying the fun of the fight as much as I used to, does that mean I’m going too much or I need to recalibrate somehow… Maybe I need to take some kids fishing so I can enjoy it through their eyes again… Well I’ll work on my attitude… Later J
Hey Greg, nice fish… I’m not sure on taking your dad out… I need to get my water line in the ground before winter sets in, which looks like next week…I have the trench dug, but need to put the pipe in the ground and bury it.. And Saturday might be my only chance, but if not, I may take him to Hyrum Saturday… We usually go on veterans day, if it’s not too cold… So most likely one of those two days we’ll make it out… You wanting to run up and go with us? Should be an open spot for you if you want… Glad you got ya a kitty… Later J
Yeah I never really target the eyes up there. I usually get quite a few as well as a bunch of smallmouth fishing suspending jerkbaits this time of year. This year I caught a few small bass on them in September, but it’s been swimbaits and drop shots that have gotten results this fall. Still, I’m surprised I haven’t caught more eyes on swimbaits, they can be killer for them. Who knows. Maybe now that it’s cooling it will change up there.
This spring when I caught all those really nice bass I had a feeling that the rest of the year was going to pale in comparison, and I was right. Looking back at some of my trips, they would have been good trips a few years ago, it’s just my frame of reference has changed.
Did you ever hear what the boat/float decisions were in Idaho next year? We’re they really closing most of the lakes to boats and floaters? Or was it just Twin Lake canals ponds? I’m getting to need to expand my go to ponds and so I was hoping to get the Idaho license next year, but if I can’t fish those lakes with the toon or boat, I just as well save my money. Last I heard you were waiting to hear something on the issue and I guess I missed when you gave your answer. At the time I thought you were thinking it might not be as bad as we originally had heard. Anyway sorry for not paying attention. Later J
I never did get around to calling. Work has been super busy, and then I kind of decided that if they’re going to make it this difficult to find out if the lakes are open or not, I’m not going to worry about it. There are no signs posted, just a sentence or two in a brief article in a small town newspaper. If they want to enforce it then they had better try a little harder. So I decided to keep fishing my favorite lake until it’s either made clearer or somebody from the canal company says something. That being said, the fall fishing wasn’t all that good this year. The water was about 8’ higher than usual for this time of year, and was also much warmer, so the fish were kind of in a summer pattern. I never got anything over 19" and I mostly had to resort to fishing deep with a dropshot.
It was just the three lakes owned by the Twin Lakes Canal Company that were in question. Johnson, Lamont, Glendale and Foster all just have horsepower restrictions now. Oneida, Treasureton and Weston are unchanged.
Thanks Greg,
I have been hearing some good reports on some other Idaho lakes for trout lately so I keep thinking I need to head north, but the next time I get a chance I’ll probably just go close so I can fish longer… I’m too lazy that way… Thanks for the info, next January I’ll have to decide what to do next year about buying the out of state license… Later J
I don’t blame you for wanting to stay closer, especially with daylight saving ending and losing that hour of afternoon. With the big change in the weather coming I’ll likely switch over to fly fishing for trout for the rest of the year. I was really hoping for one more trip to Oneida, but with such a drastic change I don’t know that the bass fishing will be worth freezing in my tube for. Oh well, time to start planning for spring.

Yes it is.[:)]
I think I’m in the same opinion, time to hit the trout again and get ready for Bear Lake whitefish. It will be fun to catch a few trout, I need to get a lighter Wt rod so I still have a fun fight, or fly fish with my 3 wt would be good. Or go to Idaho and catch a trout with some shoulders. Good luck with the new season. Later J
Thanks, you too ![]()
