Anyone been to PV in the last few days?

I’m wondering how it is up there. Was there about a week ago and temp stayed about 55 all afternoon. Considering going up tomorrow for to try for some smallies one last time.

I was up there Saturday and it was right around 54-55 still. Have you had much luck for the bass up there lately?

Some of the Big Fish flotilla fished it this morning. The water was 50° according to TubeDude. (My thermothingie finally died, apparently.)

Separate report will be posted, but as a summary - nothing much caught.

Is the fishing off because of the low water levels? The fishing seems to have gone to heck this year.

The low water has definitely changed the fishing but they can still be caught, you just have to look in different places than normal. Its actually been fishing pretty well for me this year.

\*\*There is no denying that the extremely low water has changed the fishing. The spots that typically hold fish during different times of the year may be high and dry during the same times this year.

There are still plenty of fish in the lake. But the old 90/10 rule comes into play…90 percent of the fish are in only about 10 percent of the water. You gotta find them to catch them…but finding them is no guarantee that they will be active…and bite.

That being said, Pineview continues to be plagued by small perch. There were a few years…after the tigers were abundant enough to keep the numbers of perch down…that perch were growing to bigger sizes. Crappies too. But with current low numbers of tigers and high numbers of small perch and crappies it may not get much better any time soon.

I have fished Pineview the last three fall sessions and after last year I vowed I would not return until there were better reports of bigger fish. Oops, I did it again. Other better spots to fish until conditions improve and fishing stabilizes.

That’s interesting. In the spring and summer this year I didn’t catch a single perch but towards the end of the summer up until now I have been catching them every once in a while fishing for bass and the few I have caught all seemed much bigger than what I was catching last year. I was hoping they were starting to make a comeback but maybe it was just luck.

\*\*There are some larger perch in Pineview, but by far the greatest population is the stunted masses.

I know of several folks who have caught some isolated footlongs. They seem to be more available when the bigger fish are shallow…chasing the fry from the current year’s spawn.

Another phenomenon is that there are usually a few of the larger fish hanging around with the smaller ones. But the smaller ones are more aggressive and often beat the more cautious bigger fish to your bait. Using bigger lures and baits…like you fish for smallies…is sometimes a good way to find the bigger perch.

Hmm.. That actually makes a lot of sense.

The largest ones I’ve been catching run just a fin under 8" - but every one is as thin as a hammer handle.

I didn’t measure them but last time I was out I caught some that I thought were around 11" or so. But like Tubedude said I was using bigger lures, catching them on 2.5" gulp minnows and 4" senkos while fishing for smallies.

We haven’t had much luck up there lately. At least since the weather changed 6 or so weeks ago. Even then it’s been slow for us. Part of that is due to this being a learning year, first boat, sonar, new waters etc. definitely very frustrating and eye opening season. I hope next year things come together and the water levels increase!
