perch At Yuba.

hey dog lover your post reminds me of when i was a kid and we were up to deer creek trout fishing and my pops always told me when you set the hook i want you to send that hook home so he taught me to stand up and way-lay into that pole back over my shoulders and sometimes them trout bites were perch so thered go that perch flyin over the boat to the other side my dad thought it was so funny he started callin them flyin tiger trout and that was close to 50 years ago. damn i miss that old fisherman if i could only teach him what i know now. back in the early 80s down to yuba there was no limit on perch and you were lucky to see another perch fisherman. i lived in sanaquin and my oldest boy was 4 or 5 we used to go down there and fill 2 five gallon buckets and i suffered from carpol tunnel from filleting them till i discovered mommas electric turkey knife. man could i fillet the fish then. you can tell i didnt spend much time in school by my grammar. id stay at the cabin in strawberry all summer long. hell who needed school anyway life was good. p.s. i am a true believer that alot of record fish get eaten or never shared that they got caught or the location lol

Hey Glen I remember my pop would haul us kids to DC and rent a old wood row boat. We’d cover the floor of the boat with perch then toss them all in the 50 gal trash barrels when the day was done. Cant exactly recall the name of that boat rental place, seems like it was Fish Haven, but it was real close to the bridge where the river enters the pond.. On the way to the lake we’d always stop at an old house near by that sold big fat crawlers 2 dozen for a quarter as I recall.. This was early/mid 60’s

I’m lovin’ these old stories, guys!

I fished Yuba for the first time and caught perch for the first time during the winter of '97/‘98 when a friend introduced me to a guy named Glen. What a trip that was. The Pikeman taught us perch jerkin’ through the ice and fried them up in breadcrumbs and oil right there on the ice. What a treat! I came from the So Cal salt water where I loved to fish for and eat Calico Bass, which are quite similar in taste/quality to perch. I started calling perch Rocky Mountain Calicos. I can’t believe folks used to throw them on the shore as trash.

so is Yuba froze over yet and has anyone fish it this winter if it is frozen

That was a fun time at Yuba. My son and I went on New Years Eve and was checked by the DWR. He asked why we didn’t wait until tomorrow so we could keep ten fish. Twenty if you count both limits. We just laughed and asked who wanted to drive that far just to have to turn around and go home after five minutes of fishing.

i have caught even bigger perch out of Gunnison res in the 80’s and yes we put a tape to them and some were 16 inch and just as fat at Yuba perch!!!

here is the best one i pulled out of yuba before they ate them self’s out of house and home!! with no perch coming down from Gunnison it’s going to be a long time for them to come back.. oh well we did not even get to enjoy them much this time at all..

this one was 14 inch with the tape under it if ya put the tape over the fish it was 15 1/4 and was 2.47 lbs that was certified at kent’s market in Ephram.. perchzilla as Tommy called it..

Yep He sure looks young in that picture..Its hard to think of all the holes we put in the ice by hand in a day back then..

Buy it or not thats up to you..
Back in the 70’s and in to the 80’s no one but Ray wanted to have any record like Perch or chub or sucker but Ray..

Any thing but trout in those days was a trash fish..

Some time in the 70’s we would fish at Deer Creek and I would triad trout for perch and most if not all seemed to be over 12" and bigger..

It takes time for the perch to grow and now days they just don’t get that time..

That picture brings back some great memories Pat. Loved those treks from the State Park over to Walleye Point. Those were some of the best times, but I would not like to try it today. Bass Rods needs to post the pics of his 4wheeler that went through the ice down there !!! I think the best part of those trips was that we were the only ones on the ice, no one else. One of the more interesting trips was when Anglers Inn was having a seminar on the ice down there!! There had to have been upwards of 200 people on the ice and it was bowing and flooding through all the holes. A bit scary !! Fun to reminisce at times !!

I am not offended and I hope you are not. I apologize if you are. I don’t know Cliff personally. I don’t know if he has caught 18" perch, I just know they can get that big. If I ever get one that big I will have a replica made for the wall and make fish taco’s with the fish.

Without documentation, basically every religion wouldn’t exist.

Fishing is my religion, and when I catch that record… My teachings will be passed on for generations (in the guidebook).

I am not offended and I hope you are not. I don’t get offended; I get even. (Insert loud, raucous laughter here) I apologize if you are. I don’t know Cliff personally. I don’t know if he has caught 18" perch, I just know they can get that big. If I ever get one that big I will have a replica made for the wall and make fish taco’s with the fish. And don’t forget to apply for that new state record and put the certificate on the wall next to the mount. [;)]Life is good

**I was trying to find a couple of other pics I had of Yuba but have lost some of my oldies somehow. I had one with you and a good pile of fish. And I had one of our old buddy Ralph Barz holding about a 5 inch perch hanging on the end of one of my 3" “Perch Urchin” lures.

Here’s one I did manage to save…with a nice mix of perch and walleyes taken off the rocks across the lake from Oasis.

Is all that documentation why all religions can be factually proven? The koolaide goes down pretty smooth.

Hey guys I found a couple pictures I kept from the good old Yuba days thought I’d share. I even learned how to put the tape behind the fish instead of holding the tape over the fish. You can tell how big the perch are I was a skinny cat back then. Enjoy
