My only advice is to NOT dump her in the canoe her first time out. I know this from experience, and she still married me, but, still…
We made it!..and thankfully a pretty decent experience for her, and of course for me also..Friday didn’t work out, but we did hit Echo with my canoe, E-motoring out to the middle by about 0900..this was yesterday, Wed, the 25th..quite a few boaters out already for this time of year, and it sure was a pleasant morning to be out..No water plunges for her! thank goodness…we started shallower, like last week with my buddy, about 5 to 7’ down…same chartreuse lure colors with small nite crawler pcs…no hits first 1/2 hour…I was starting to sweat…her first time, and I’d told her how good it was last week, new O.G. husband trying to make an impression..nothing going on..I tried my best excuses..weather too warm too quick, moon phase charts said "poor" fishing week, etc, etc..finally we passed another boater who said they’d caught 3, he said catchin’ deeper today, around 14 to 18’ down, so I added the proper weight to get her down there..Yup, she got the first one of the day, her first fish ever caught all by herself..She was thrilled, I was thrilled..good thing it was double hooked pretty good, cuz that 16" bow came in pretty fast!..she got 2 more hits before I could get mine in and add weight..Yes, I’m doing the worms for her..then she gets her second..18.5"er!!..now I’m feeling a little left out, so had a quick word with the fishing gods, and finally got my only hit for the morning, nice 16.5"er…a little windy for awhile, then very calm the rest of our morning..she was comfortable in the new back rest seat I’d just purchased for her, so we still enjoyed the last hour of no activity (ok, 2 more short hits for her)…Then about 11:30, on our final approach back to the dock, she gets hit again..this one stays on..19" German Brown!!..she was a happy fisherwoman..I was thrilled..I’m pretty sure she’ll go again..thanks all for the well-wishes…my buddy said the E doves kinda temporarily left with this cold snap and all the recent work he’s been doing on his farm property, so dove hunt with my bride has to wait for a week or two..
Guluk..
Congrats to the both of you. Sounds a very good trip.
Glad it all worked out Joe and it sounds like she caught some decent fish too, congrats on a great first outing, hopefully the first of many to come.
Sounds like you done good Joe. Happy to hear you gave your bride a wonderful memory. Mike & I hit Rockport on Wednesday and while our count was a little higher than yours, we didn’t boat anything over 12" to include one kokanee. We had maybe 15 strikes and boated 5 which were all returned to the lake. I will say I can’t recall ever seeing as many fish on the sonar as we saw there on Wednesday. We did mark some larger balls of fish which I’m guessing were kokanee. We fished depths of 5 to 30 feet with multiple tackle/color changes. Didn’t seem to matter; it was just a very slow day.
You will see perch balls at Rockport anywhere from 10 to 30 feet. Catch them all the time trolling for bows and Kokes.
Some of you knew my wife of 38 years, passed away over 4 years ago…couple very tough years, then again sorta got the itch to open my eyes again..Somehow, gratefully, a little less than a year ago, I met who was to be my new partner, and we were married 1 month ago..New fishing partner?..Yup, looks like it…she had wanted to try ice fishing with me, but that just didn’t work this year…she’s coming along on a Eurasian dove hunt with me in 2 weeks, and we’re taking my canoe out to Echo this Friday–if the weather stays good…think I’m a pretty lucky O.G..!!..I know some of you guys have lost a spouse, and that is/was a tough club to belong to…re-marriage certainly isn’t for everyone, and it certainly isn’t easy for us either, but we’d have it no other way…
Yesterday, a friend and I did take my canoe out to try Echo, before I take my new bride out there, to give trolling a try…I want it to be a good experience for her…so it may be a shorter trip to give her the feel for it…My buddy and I did pretty good, 7 nice 'bows netted, and 8 or 9 misses…all in upper 10’column, chartreuse hoochies and squids, dodgers like for kokanee…fun morning…I need the fishing gods to be with us!! Guluck to all this season… ![]()
Cool. Let us know how the trip went.
Good for you Joe, it’s hard to start over as we age, glad you found someone that wants to try and share the things you enjoy. Hope that first trip goes well.
