Newton Tigers

 So what you all are saying is that no one should ever fish YOUR lake. because apparently you all own it and don’t want to share it with anyone else. If you dont like fishing with fellow fisherman then you should find a new hobby!
Watch your language, no matter how you try and word it that was too much. WH2

Wehave fished newton alot, yesterday my buddy went fishing there and said he found a 36" tiger muskie dead on the bank. I think we might see more of this unfortuanately.

I went out thismorning and found 2 dead one around 36 the other around 27. There were side by side

I promise you Hunter whatever, you are no fellow fisherman.

Walk away dude I’ll only say it once.

well… that escalated quickly…

I’m not liking the dead musky tossed on shore thing. Stupid people. They had better hope I don’t catch them doing that.

They probably died from exhaustion (from being fought too long) and washed up on shore. Who knows, there are some pretty ignorant people out there.

I’m really hoping that’s all it is. It’s unfortunate, but it happens. If people are intentionally throwing them on the bank, they need to lose a couple hundred bucks from their bank account.

I agree they are more then likely washing up. I can’t see anyone intentionally THROWING them to shore.
I fish a TROUT lake that use to have monster trout. Regardless of the reasons it no longer isn’t the issue, but back when, you would find 24" and up Trout floating…as mentioned, unintentional exhaustion.

And hunter9893…you can’t be serious?!

We all have our favorite little lakes that get exploited. Late Great Doug Miller blasted several lakes.
I can think of several that will never be the same. One that comes to mind is Henry’s.
Last year was a very unusual year in that anyone could catch fish there…Look what happened this year…Combat fishing at it’s worst!

The world population just keeps getting bigger and bigger!!!

It probably is just exhaustion, though you never know. I was talking to another fisherman about a month back while I was out fishing, and he told me he had seen some teenage kids throwing trout on the bank and leaving them at one of the Preston area lakes. I just don’t understand some people.

I think Newton just makes me sad since we bought a house out there last year. I was so excited to be living so close to a favorite new fishing hole. Oh well, that’s how life goes. I guess I’ll just have to get up early and hit it before everyone else shows up.

I don’t buy the over played issue. It’s not 90-100 degrees out yet and I’m sure the water is plenty oxygenated. It’s a simple fact about fishing, there is a small percent mortality rate among caught fish, no matter how well handled and released the fish was. Despite the tough appearance, tiger muskies are very delicate to handling and time out of water(read Musky Hunter or Esox Angler for the least damaging ways to release them). Another fact, bait caught mortality rate is higher than artificial fly/lure mortality rate. Check the washed up fish next time to see if there is a big treble bait hook blocking the food pathway. Remember, by law they have to be released no matter how caught, so if the tiger takes a cut bait way down gullet then the only reasonable way to release it is to cut the line or the fish may have cut the line during the fight. Then they litterally cannot take any more food down and it’s just a matter of time. That is what I saw a lot of on Pineview when I worked for the DWR(not to mention severe mishandling from lure caught tigers while trying to get a picture snapped). I’m all for getting a quick picture but we have to remember the welfare of the fish. I’m heading up tommorow so I’ll keep an eye out myself.

Yeah, I have heard some people mention using cut bait lately. I’ve also seen a lot of pictures of people basically mawling the poor fish while getting pictures. Hopefully they can find a disease free source soon so we can keep them going.

I heard from a credible source that he watched an angler take a tiger home from Newton recently!..and he helped another angler who was ill prepared to handle a tiger (no pliers, net, gloves…etc)

I think an issue is that there are lots of people who are new to Tiger Musky and are just looking to catch one (good for you!). They set out with all the “catching gear” but they for get the “handling” gear. As a result…the fish get beat up, over played, etc… PLEASE do you homework with regulations and proper handling techniques…and go prepared.

As much as we all hate to admit it… they are a limited resource right now… and they WILL diminish. Right now they are easy to catch at Newton so they are getting hit hard…like it or not, that will change…

Good point on being prepared, I don’t have a lot of experience with tiger musky but have caught gobs of pike. Long pliers is an obvious one but a jaw spreader is as important imho. I’ve caught them where there is no way I would have gotten the lure out without one of those babies. Threw one overboard instead of the fish one time, had to run into town and get another one before I kept fishing. Got into a routine we were catching a lot of them, was used to putting the spreaders in the fish, unhooking the lure, throwing the fish back and setting the spreaders down, instead I threw the spreaders over and was seting the fish down. Funny now, really pissed me off then. Now there is one permanently tied to my boat so that never happens again.

When Fishhound and I were that a few weeks ago some guy was trolling and he stopped and talked to us for a minute and said he caught 5 and was trying to catch one over last years size limit (42" ??) so he could take it home… I mentioned to him that 2009 regs state that Newton is catch and release only… He didn’t know.. People are not reading the regs and are going by what last years were… I hope this dont happen much…

there is a sign stating it right by the boat ramp… but i have heard ppl saying they have been out there but yet to catch one over 40 so they can keep it…

Unfortunately, there are many people who are oblivoius to the regs  and complainging about it on forums like this is usually just like preaching to the choir. Most the people who don’t give a schnitzel about keeping up with the regs never read forums like this.
Since this is a Newton thread, I’ll try to give a useful report for today. A buddy of mine and I hit Newton from 5:30am to 6:00 pm and boated 3 tigers and 2 whopper bass. Yeah you’d think with a name like MuskyCoop I could produce better numbers than that but today it was muskies 4(4strikes) me 0(0hookups). I guess the more appropriate name for me today was BassCoop since I got the bass while fishing for tigers and my friend picked up two muskies on spinners and one on the fly(that was some cool video footage!). What a great day to be on the water though.

Sounds like some fish and game officers need to head up that way and do some educating. I’m sure people will remember to check the proclamation from now on if they get gouged with a nice ticket.

Thanks for the fishing report muskycoop, in case you are interested, you can upload your video here on BFT at this link. http://www.bigfishtackle.com/videos/
By the way, welcome to the site and thanks for joining. WH2

I do not know if Drew or the DNR has read this but I am very surprised they have not imposed a barbless hook only on these Tiger waters…and a no removing fish from the water - so people will use cradles and maximize the few fish we have left.

I wish they would atleast plant some pike as they wait for the Tigers (it will be 5 years before they are catchable size).

The DNR is wanting Pike removed from Yuba - an idea would be to remove 500 or so pike and place 250 in 2 different lakes with a NO KEEPING them policy for 5 years (until established).
