new reel, and just started lure fishing

then i will just use the 20lb test mono i have on it now as backing, get a 30lb spool of braided, put the braided on first, then mono, then unspool and put the mono on first and attach a barrel swivel to the end of the braided… or perhaps just tie a loop into the end of it (so it can still be easily pulled through the eyes to take the reel or spool out) and use the remaining 20lb test i have to fashion leaders that i can cut and retie freely.. kind of like how a fly-fishing line is set up to have that removable leader on it, ya know?..

are there any knots i can tie a monofilament leader onto that can be undone to attach a new leader without cutting the braided?.. if i tie the end of the braided into a look, i could just tie the monofilament leaders to swivels i can hook onto the loop i guess

I wouldn’t do that. YOu’re asking for line twist. If you only need 100 yards of line on the reel for what you’re doing, just fill the reel about half way with mono, and then hit it with the braid. The reel doesn’t have to be jammed with line.

thats fair enough.. as a baitcaster theres really no negative effect to having to little line on there like there is with spinning reels.. so yeah, it shouldnt even matter if its full or not

hey buddy..

im new here…recently i just bought a used reel and just cant wait to take it to action.

i feel like an idiot right now.. see, the reel i purchased, turns out isnt the same size as other abu garcia reels.. its the 5600WS which looks identicle to the C4 gold and blue reel, however, its smaller, and as such, holds considerably less line capacity, while remaining much lighter and better balanced, essentially the handling characteristics of a low profile baitcaster in the design of a round baitcaster

normal abu round baitcasters do in fact hold 205 yards of 12lb test.. mine however holds 135 yards of 12lb test.. i really love this reel, feels weightless, but geeze.. i can get a 150 yard spool of 50lb braid, fill it, and have some left over

that being said.. i can fill my spool with 50lb braid.. maybe use a piece of duct or electrical tape for a backing, or 25 yards of 20lb monofilament plus 150 yards of 30lb braided.. either way will fill the spool

question is.. will there be any noticable casting characteristics between 30 and 50lb braided lines.. as even 30lbs would be considered overkill for the fish here the decision all comes down to which will cast better, and which will handle better in the water

but all that aside, this reel being smaller, and lighter probably handles more like a low-profile baitcaster, in which i am really starting to like the features of baitcasting reels.. i really like casting with my thumb on the spool as opposed to hooking my finger around the line for a spinning reel and for some reason i feel like i have more control over the rod/reel with these smaller baitcasters than i did with spinning.. i havent had a single backlash in the last 10 hours of fishing (about 4-5 days worth) and im really beginning to see them as a superior reel..

the only downside is i could only get this reel in a right hand setup.. yes, im right handed, but this is why i prefer a left hand retrieve.. in my experience with spinning reels i would always switch the crank to the left side so i can cast and retrieve without switching hands.. so i think im going to retire my spinning rod/reel setup and look to add a second baitcaster to my arsenal, and for this im seriously considering a low profile baitcaster.. so feel free to recommend one around $50, that i can purchase in a left hand retrieve and ill order one

The 50 pound braid will be too much for the rod. It also will not cast as good as the lighter braid. I’d honestly put your mono backing on there, and fill it with 20 lb braid.

.009" line diameter on the 20lb braided isnt going to be excessively thin?.. and ill probably just put 12lb monofilament on this reel as im looking to sell this or use it as a backup and get a new reel (the one i have now is a right hand retrieve and no matter how hard i try i cant get used to switching hands to reel, im used to a left hand retrieve as thats how my spinning reels were set up).. and ill put braided on the new reel after i decide what itll be and buy it

No, 20 lb is just fine.
