Name this fish!

Damn, you caught that with your camera[;)]looks fresh to death. did anyone eat it,I have to know.anyway hear this,we saw one drifting in bluewater.we’re eating lunch. My mother throwing out the peels of watermelon, and i’m seeing something eating the watermelon peels.I watched them all disappear as they drifted out.My brother cast one on a hook 20lb mono,we saw it close up as it took take the bait, then just watched my brother get nearly spooled until he broke off, eventually someone said its called a moon fish.always wanted to hook another.now I chum watermellon even strawberries, and grapes.I treat it like i’m fishing for Pacu.I call it the OceanPacu.its the only herbivore fish I have ever seen in the sea.It could be a serious game fish it was, really fast ,like an underwater rocket.this was years ago.a great memory shared with my familly on our Wellcraft w/cabin

Tarpon 4 Me, I’d say that was a sierra too, because it was caught near shore. They catch them in Baja in the Sea or Cortez.
Am I right?
PaulPro, no one ate that fish. The link to the story explains why. Basically no one who saw it knew what it was!!! I never saw it on the beach, I only saw the pics afterwards, but right away I knew it was a ultra rare fined, especially on the beach, whole, fresh, in San Diego!
In fact I ended up interviewing one of the world’s top Opah scientists. It turned into one heck of a story unto itself!

LOL, you got me. I was fairly certain. If you look at the picture below, they look almost identical. There are types of snakeheads that are the exact coloration as well. Interesting…

And yes, the fish in the picture i posted is a Spanish Mackerel. Good job. As for the characterisitic unique to Spanish Mackerel, it’s the black spot on the front of it’s dorsal fin. King and Cero mackerel do not have that mark, only Spanish. Many people keep undersized King Mackerel thinking they are spanish mackerel, as juvinile KIngs look nearly identical, spots and all.

Ya that was a good laugh,The snake head is longer, and i’ve got some spanish mac,s down here too.how bout this one, its freshwater, but they make my tank look like a saltwater tank, you see them on youtube alot, plus they are metioned in the bible.and are evil

Jon, did you see its teeth, are they like Pacu teeth “humanlike”? I see alot in common with this fish and a the Pacu,it looks like an ocean version.herbivore ,shape of fish, and powerfull.this is a small pacu in this pic 003.,an adult 40lb Pacu is similar in shape.it could be its freshwater relative.

Paulpro,
The opah fish was well over 100 pounds. I never saw it’s teeth but I doubt they are like what you are referring to, which I have seen in pics. Those are really wild looking! Opah are carnivorous. I have a friend in Hawaii that is a captain and he has caught one deep dropping at like 800-1200 ft so that is why the opah washing up on the shore story is so wild- the how and where of the story is so bizarre. Even more bizarre- at least to me, is that a friend of mine found it. If he hadn’t shown it to me noone would have realized it was an opah, because as you can see in the story they thought it was a sunfish, which are very common in San Diego.

You can get a feel of the size with this pic:

Wow…thats awesome, hmm, maybe what my brother hooked, was a sunfish.I’m telling you, something ate the watermelon peel and was big, nearly spooled my bro,the color was simillar.allways wanted to find out what it was ,Just thought maybe it was this fish.I like the fact someone hooked one,ate it?looks tasty…mmm..

whiting

shuvel nose

Ok guys, name THIS fish.
Extra points for naming the location.

O.k jon,you are really testing my pro skills.I have three guesses, one its a short bill probably caught on your trip to Hawaii,2nd looks like it was rehooked for picture,am I correct for both.,my first guess was whitemarlin, obvious short nose.I’m just going on my pro skills,no internet for help like some of these guys.I just put two and two together.O,caught in Hawaii, since I knew you were there.

O.K, lets take this on land.sorry to go off subject,.whats this…hint, attracts flies, looks sticky,it had actually fallen on its side, grows in humid places, found some at neighbors too?,on some blacksoil
Also guess what part of a longnosegar this is,pic 181.

I’m guessing the first “snakehead” fish is actually a pike cichlid?
the other is a red devil, another kind of cichlid.
is the ring from a gar made from a vomer?
Josh

That’s what I thought, a red devil. They are evil in a tank.
PaulPro, good work, yes it’s a shortbill, or shortnose spearfish. I didn’t rehook it though. That’s not possible with larger fish- maybe for bass and small dorado, etc but I can’t imagine how one would manage to keep control of a fish that big- even if it is the smallest billfish, it’s going about 50 pounds- without it squirming away. I was in the water the whole time and the fish never came out so it’s me snorkeling with a lively hooked up fish.

If you go here and look at the spearfish article you can see an close up of how the fish was hooked. The hook was straight through the middle of the bill.

i know what they are !!! i know what they are!!! but i’ll let them figure it out lol [sly][fishon]

Jon, you’re photos are breath taking! I enjoyed checking out your links and the accompanying stories and photos.
it’s got me stoked for next week. My wife and I are taking our one year old to Kauai with my in-laws for two weeks on Tuesday. My wife told me a couple days ago I could book a half day charter. I called Captain Don (I’ve been on his boat two other times) and I’m going out the day after I get there!
I don’t care what we target. I would be as happy catching bonita as dolphin or even marlin. I’m just so excited to get out on that beautiful blue water again. I live in the middle of the desert so I relish every opportunity to return to where we all came from at some point in time.
thanks for posting your photos!

Wow it looks barely hooked in pic,I was just going on clues.I should have some underwater pics with a nice dorado,I jumped in too.One day drifting in blue water we were shocked to see a shark way longer than the width of his transom on his Wellcraft. Man We think it was a great white ,I saw a big mouth with teeth.I don’t swim in open water anymore.shark made one pass up the chum line and was gone.I read a report of one attacking a dudes Tarpon down here in the Fl. keys.so was the shortbill in caught in Hawaii?

yea, a red devil ..yessss…no someone said wolf cichlid on a hint that its named after an animal,I just got another pic of one check it out, also name these other fish, in the tank…they are all cichlids.

Damn man, I had to google that word, man thats a human part read its a part of the skull between the nasols?Fish don’t even have a vomer…here is another hint, I made two, another hint the bass down here have them.but look different.I hope that did’nt make it more difficult.,What do you think about the ring, truely, one of a kind.gave the other away for good luck.I even used it to slash my buddies arm, made him bleed a little.I coated the ring with nailpolish P.S..ring was undamaged from my slicing pounch,to his arm..

Hmmmm. All south american? I don’t think I know the light ones.
