Finally got everything planted over the weekend, Cantaloupe and watermelon in Grow box #1. Zucchini, snow peas and green beans in GB #2
Kale, cucumbers and yellow squash in GB #3
Now I need to rebuild my hoop green house in part of my #2 grow box, and finish getting branches to fill my new grow boxes before filling them with dirt.
Wow, I haven’t dared try the warmer weather stuff yet… I did plant the tomatoes in the high tunnel and they nearly froze last night… 33 degrees so I’m pretty shy to do the canteloup and squash yet… They are pretty tender… Goood luck, but you’re warmer than us for sure… Later J
The reason I went ahead and planted the seed, is because it takes 10 days to two weeks before they sprout. By then I think the temps will be warmer, plus some of those seeds are in my hoop green house, so they will have the effect of the warmer temps those GH’s will provide. I’m hoping by then, if those seeds do not sprout, I’ll be able to find a nursery that has plants I can buy, if it isn’t too late.
Sounds like a good plan… I got my tomatoes out in HT and had 33 the next morning, so missed a bullet… But looks like warmer temps coming at us for the next ten days… Hopefully we can start to get everything in soon… J
I’m about 90% done on all my planting, just about ready to un-winterize my boat and start drowning a worm or two. Also just had my last (36 visits 3 month’s worth) cardiac rehab on Wednesday so that will free up a lot of my time.
Are you planting seeds or plants? So far I’ve only planted seed and the ones in my little hoop green houses have sprouted and look great but the ones in the open have yet to come up. I’ll give them another two weeks if nothing comes up, I’m hoping the nursery still has plants to buy. Good time of the year to get that boat ready, the catching is really turning on. Wow, 36 visits in 3 months, you must be going several times a week, hope it’s all working out for you.
Yeah, it’s been a long 3 months. I’ve been going Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I’m glad it’s over with. How are you doing now? Have you been able to do a little fishing yet.
I’ve planted tomatoes and bell peppers that I bought from nurseries. Everything else by seed. I’ve planted lettuce and peas about 5 weeks ago and they are doing really well. My garlic is getting close to digging up but I planted them last fall. I’m trying shallots this year but don’t know how well they will do. I’ve planted carrots, cucumbers and a few other veggies all by seed. I added 2 new metal grow boxes this year. The weather has been really weird this year too. The temps have been up and down, and it doesn’t make for a ideal conditions for growing seeds.
I’m in the hospital now, my last four day chemo treatment. I’ve been getting out a little, with Alan and Ira but not for two weeks after the treatment,giving my platelets time to recover. It’s been a long process, starting back on Dec 15
Sounds like you have a lot planted already but you are right about the weather this year. Thank goodness for my little mini green houses, they make a huge difference on how the ground warms up with them in place and the seeds sprout a lot earlier. Not sure I’ll get my new grow boxes done this year, one is close, I just need to find some dirt to finish filling it. It sounds like you have a lot of room to plant different vegetables, I’m kind of limited now but a number of years back, I had a huge garden before the developers came in and built condos behind our house, then I had to down size to what I have now, three older grow boxes and these metal boxes I got this year.
Glad to hear you’re on your last treatment. Chemo can be/and is a VERY hard thing to do. I hope that you have fantastic and total success now. Now it’s time to recover and start making some fish and veggie dinners. I wish you the best now. 
With my appetite not being what it was before this all start, we still have lots of blanched vegetables in the freezer, so I have plenty to carry me over until this years garden starts producing. But the fish dinners are another matter, I think in two weeks from now, as my platelets recover, the catching will be red hot, my friends are already putting limits in the box, so it’s already started. Heading home in a hour or so to start my last phase of this process. Thanks for the well wishes, those and prayers are always welcome. Time for you to get that boat out and catch some fish too.
Hi Curt , hey I wasn’t aware that you were doing Chemo , sorry to hear that. It sounds like your doing alright , hope your able to wet a line soon. On the subject of the Garden , I built 2 more Above the ground boxes because we changed the design of the garden this year and added 12 more Bales of Straw for Cucumbers , Squash, and Pumpkins. I really like this Straw bale Garden method , we do very well with all of our Vegetables including Potatoes.

I’ll need to go back in next month for a bone marrow extraction, to make sure the AML is gone but hopefully the worst is over. Wow, you added 12 more bales to you garden, is that in addition to the 35 you were going to replace?
Yes , we decided to build the 2 boxes instead of just lining them up on the ground . I like this this type of gardening as it is easier on my lower back that hurts all of the time anyway, and when the bales deteriorate from the inside out they turn into good rich Compost ready for the next year. The boxes are 2ft. tall almost no weeding to worry about .

Hey Curt, good luck with this round… Hope you bounce back for an early return to the bay… Dan, I’m going to have to learn more about cucumbers from your straw bales, that sounds like a really good way to do them… I am having the hardest time getting things in the ground this year and then these continual frost nights are rough… I planted my high tunnel last friday with 5 dozen tomatoe plants and 7 dozen pepper plants, so I’m really hoping it made it through the 27 degrees last night… I had them all covered and my thermometer under the row cover said 38, so I hope they all survived.. My potatoes were really looking good along with the corn, but I didn’t have enough covers to get them taken care of… Probably cold enough it will burn them off, but hope they come back okay… Can somebody flip the switch so the winter cold will go back to ice season instead of the garden season… Later J
Took some pics this morning of the seeds I planted a week ago or so. The zucchini look good, that were in my little greenhouse but the ones out in the open, with no cover are just starting to sprout, can you tell the difference? Now it looks like I have some weeding to do.

Do you just put holes in you water lines? How do you keep the pressure from Shooting water out at high pressure? I’m using black funny pipe I put drip regulators in to keep water flowing at lower pressure at set amounts per minute.. I like the idea of just making holes at plants, if that’s what you are doing.
I too have a low pressure regular, on each of my different boxes, then I use a special pipe, that comes in two different types, one type has the emitters built into the line, with the other type, you have to puncture a hole,then install the emitter, in that hole. I’ll take a pic of them, so you can see what I’m using. These emitters put out .5 to 1 gpm. I get all my low pressure drip lines and regulars from Chad’s sprinklers on Wall Avu, in Ogden. The lines that come pre made, will be at different spacings, depending on what you are growing 12", 24", 36".
I need to replace some of them, over time they get clogged but it takes 6 to 8 years before that happens.
Hey Curt that looks really good… I’m going to try and get stuff planted this weekend. I got more killer frost again this week, burnt off the taters and random corn kills through the patch and looks like it wiped out the grapes… Hope the raspberries make it or it will be a fruitless year… Later J
