Mirror Lake area questions

Fehr lake has some little brookies in it. The fishing is pretty good as they plant it regularly it seems. I’d say it’s less than a mile off the road. Bud and Bonnie are just a short jaunt from the highway. I think there is a trail that goes from the north end of mirror lake up to Bonnie which is less than a mile away and then continues on north fairly close to Bud lake, but I believe it’s quicker to just stay on the highway to get to them. Bud and Bonnie have brookies. I haven’t been to them in a few years as they are so close to the highway and I like to avoid huge crowds. I’m sure you’ll catch fish at all three lakes fairly easily with spinners or flies, or even easier with a worm on the bottom. Bud and Bonnie are probably less than half as deep as Fehr so you probably can expect slightly larger fish possible at Fehr.

Also, there is a trail, I believ it’s called Fehr lake trail, that continues on to lakes at the end of the Murdock basin road. This is a good trail to get you to lakes that you would have to drive a lengthy dirt road to get to otherwise. Expect more solitud and better fishing/bigger fish at lakes further from the m.l. highway. I’ve experienced some nice, nice cutties out of Marshall Lake. Other lakes over in the area are Hoover, Shepherd, Maba, and Cobbs. I did this loop two years ago and found decent fishing at all, but keep in mind that these lakes can be reached by a road so you may find some company there.

Whewwww, long winded I am, I am.
Need Beer.

I like Junksiege’s calculation, you can never have too much beer (root) and you always know some yahoo will show up to drink their share whether you can spare it or not.

Par-take or not it all goes in the same place!!! Enjoy the outing catch loads of fish and let us all know what we missed come Monday

Thanks for the info on the lakes. I guess i need a map on the unitas that will give me more detail. I am just using my topo software and looking at lakes in the area.

Another thing, kidnme, if you are going up via Kamas, stop by the hatchery and take the kids on a tour through it. It is nice and educational and they will start off learning how to identify the fish and the different species and just an understanding (if old enough) of what actually goes into creating and managing fisheries. The tours are at 9, 11, 1 and 3 every day. If you miss them they have a couple spots you can look at the fish in a submerged pond and a look in the fry area.

Also I was up in the Uintas this weekend, although I did not fish , we drove around and let me tell you the road side lakes were a zoo! People everywhere, full parking lots and just a lot of caos. The wife and I drove the far end and drove up to lake Whitney and Beaver and there were a bunch of people there as well, and not to miss a bunch of moose and elk. The map that they give you at the ranger pay station is garbage, I would hit REI or something like that and buy a real map that will detail the roads and trails better.

I hope to get my family out this weekend for a day trip. Who knows, we might just happen to see ya! Have a fun trip and be safe, especially important in the high uintas. Another thing, we did not notice nearly as many bugs this year as last year, hopefully this was not a quirk.

oej, a week ago my daughter and I got eaten up in the sulfur campground until we hit the deep woods off, then they wouldn’t come near us, but up to that point it was really bad. But not the fishing that was great!!!

Right…roadside lakes are a zoo. That is a given on any weekend. As I said before, try to get away from the roads if you can, it will make your trip much more memorable.
And ditto on the hatchery advice, kids will love it.
Also, a great place for maps is the wildlife office on North Temple (I think) in slc near the fair grounds, someone here probably has the address. The have a big sign outside that says “TOPO” maps. Great map choices in there.

Correct on the DWR office just east of Redwood road and right next door to Burger King. If you go there pick your maps carefully, they aren’t cheap there, but they do have some good ones.

The Hatchery would be a blast, were is it located at in Kamas is it easy to find? Thanks for the reminder on the bug’s, I almost forgot about the missry they create.

I was planning on running to sportsmans or Payson sports to see if they had a map.

If you chance to come up. I will be one not fishing because I will be too busy rigging poles, baiting hooks, untangling poles and hopefully taking fish off of the lines.

Are the roadside lakes real busy on Friday mornings?

Junksiege knows his stuff. Take a few extra minutes and walk away from the highway and easy access points and the fishing will be much, much better for you. It is worth the extra effort. Take a lunch, some rain gear, and make a half day out of it. The scenery will be better too. A lot less trash and a lot more quiet.

No, most people show up for the weekend later on Friday, but at the more popluar areas there are always people.

I was on the pass lake trail head last Tuesday and I saw probably 10 people fishing right near the highway at Pass Lake. It is probable to run into people on any day of the week at the roadside lakes. I would wager that Friday would be the third busiest day of the week following Saturday and Sunday.

The hatchery is up the mirror lake senic route, the only paved road in and out. I do not know the exact mileage from town, I want to 2 or 3, but do not quote me. There are not any signs that point you off and the drive is hidden a bit but it is large. The buildings are on the right hand side as you enter the uinta’s. They are fairly new and they have dark green metal roofs on them and are visible from the road before the drive. Plan on a couple hours because of the tour and everything to look at, plus it is a nice break in the ride if you have smaller kids.

I will be in the same boat as you, rigging, untangling, pulling fish off lines… Some time I should have my wife get it all on the video cam and post for all to laugh at, do not get em wrong I would not trade it for the world.

I bought a Utah road map book that is very well laid out. I think I paid about 20 bucks for it at REI or somewhere like that. It stays in my Jeep and I always use it and it has been very accurate for me in all areas I have been in the state (moab, uintas, delta area, zions, wasatch front). OEJ, I agree that there is nothing in the world more rewarding than watching your kids or any kid catch a fish.

We are going to try and stop by the hatchery on Saturday, thanks for the info.

You should try and make it to the next perch party. If you think running after the kids poles was a full time job in the uinta’s, try perch on for size. It is a dedicated 1:1 ratio with those little guys.

Have fun up there, hope to see you running around.

Bassco, thanks for the info. Do you know if there is a ranger station on the kamas side. Or is the bear river ranger station the only one on the road that sells the map.

There is a ranger station in kamas right in town across the street (not quite directly) from the chevron at the very beginning of the m.l. hwy in kamas. Basically as you make the turn onto the hwy it’s right on your right. You can probably find there number and give em a call.
