funny stuff!!! Couple years ago i was trolling and hooked into a fish… as it turned out i had snagged another rod that was hooked to a wiper. landed both the rod and the fish. As if that was’t crazy enough about 10 minutes later i had another fish on. I snagged another line that was also attached to a wiper, landed the wiper. this one had clearly broken an angler off… I ended the day with 2 borrowed wipers.
Great story Rich, thanks for sharing it with us.
After reading it, it reminded me of something similar that happen to me but instead, I some how caught the line of someone, that had broken off a wiper. It was amazing that I somehow hooked someones line but how that line stayed connect to my lure was beyond me. I got my lure in, then hand lined the other line in with the wiper and the lure that had caught it. I made a post about and another member said it belonged to him and the story that lead up to him loosing the fish. Crazy stuff happens when your dealing with fish[crazy].
When I read the part about Fishing 101, I was thinking it was likely what you have said but I just wasn’t sure, so I had to ask. I’ll have to ask to see if anyone is interested in taking on a project like that, sounds like some experience in reel repair might help.[;)]
The reason I was holding the rod in my hand was because I was bottom bouncing for walleye but it seems these wily wipers will always take advantage of someone that isn’t paying close attention to their rod[crazy] and it’s always after hours of no action.
Good story Tony.
**If it does not involve a lot of costly parts, I would be glad to help with the rod and reel repairs and tuneups. A lot of times simply rewrapping a guide or cleaning and lubing a reel is all that is necessary to restore them to usability.
If we can get a few members actively involved in gathering and handing out tackle I will do what I can to help.
One of the things we did in Salt Lake a couple of times was have a “workshop” on basic fishing…knots, hooks, lures, types of tackle, etc. This was held at one of the community ponds and we had casting instruction and practice afterward. Various volunteer members helped with demoing spinning, baitcast and fly casting. Helped both young folks and few older newbies too.

Wish I could find my pole that went in there while ice fishing. Sounds like you were in the wrong spot though, and mine didn’t have a shimano reel on it. Cool story though.
Pat that’s a good idea, maybe something to talk about this weekend at the flotilla… I know I have some older rods I never use anymore, that just as well be relocated to someone that will have some fun with them… They aren’t great, but they work and will catch fish… Have a few reels that need some misc.. parts that could be repurposed as well.. Good idea… Later J
Awesome, thanks Pat, thats a skill that will come in handy if we start getting tackel donated. We need to figure out a few things, then make a post about it, to see what kind of intrest there is. Thanks for bringing this subject up.
It would be fun to hear what weird things people have pulled in on their fishing rods, maybe in a new post. …
At Sandy Pond, a cormorant swallowed my rather large hook and bait on high test braid while fishing. I thought I caught a big fish and it was a powerful fighter moving fast underwater in large circles. It was able to cut the braid. It surfaced nearby and somehow spit out the bait and seemed fine.
I haven’t lost a rod at Willard nor elsewhere.
bad as I hate to say it, I lost one. On a particular slow day I was trolling andholding my pole when I decided I needed a drink so I put the pole down and proceeded to get my drink out of the cooler. I turned back around to see my pole get hit and very neating fling out the back of the boat. Never did find it

Lost one at the southwest corner a few years back. shore fishing for wipers. went back the next day and seen a couple of guys in a boat who were pulling line in by hand then seen a rod come up. they were close enough to shore that I yell at them and expanded what had happen the day before and described my rod the guys said this looks like it and gladly brought it to shore for me they kept the 4 lb wiper that was still swimming on the end of the line.
I lost my old cell phone (flip phone) several years ago in Freeway Bay. It fell out of my shirt pocket when I leaned over to land a fish. I marked it on my chartplotter, but the resale is practically nil.
I lost a nice Calstar rod and a Daiwa SLD30 a couple of years ago tuna fishing out of La Push. I was working on one fish when the other rod when off. I tightened the drag a bit too much and the Scotty rodholder snapped of. I heard it go and looked over just as that rod enter the water, heading for Davy Jones’ locker 3000’ below. About $300 lost. Cost me over $1000 to make it right, though. That Daiwa was discontinued, so I had to buy two Shimano Tiagras 30Ws to maintain symmetry, plus the new rod. Costly brain fart.
Now thats a great story John, I’d say there are few members that can say they lost a R & R to a fish but went back the next day and got it back.
Well, I think it was a bit of both. It was a strong carp, and the wood bracket the holder was mounted to was about 7 years. I fixed that problem the next day by replacing the wood bracket on the 2 stern rod holders with a 3/4" piece of Trex decking, and went thru the holder, the Trex and the boat deck with large, course thread bolts. No problems since.
Wow, thats got to be one of the best stories yet, what are the odds of catching not one but two wipers that someone else had caught and lost. Thanks for sharing that story.
Wish that was on Video. Ha
Not a rod or reel, but I did lose my aluminum net at Hyrum last year. It’s replacement has a piece of swimming noodle on the handle so at least it will float when I try to lose that one.
I’ve never lost a rod; however, I lost my glasses and phone on the ramp of the South Marina last Saturday. I went in for it but it is so slippery i could barely stand up. I kept sliding down into deeper water. I guessed the phone landed on the slippery cement and just kept sliding down also… I’m looking forward to catching a rod & reel
since I aint getting any fish out there…
humpy
Ia few weeks ago we went out to Pelican for the evening bite (not much of a bite but an excuse to get out) and got talking to a friend about this subject. All of the sudden he yells at me that one of my rods was going in and I thought he was just messin with me but when I looked back, my rod was getting dragged down the beach into the water. I managed to grab it as it was going in the water!
Another time we were drowning mussels out of our boat and my boy had set his down. Soon enough it started airborne toward GSL and I snagged it with my net that I was holding because we had just landed another one. It can sure get crazy when the bite is on and there are 3-4 rods in the boat with kids![:P]
I lost a rod and real at UL last Sunday. I was standing at a the front of the boat with my bow hoping for a shot at a carp. I heard a strange noise and a pop. I turned around to see my pole scoot across the water. My pole holder was turned upside down. 2 screws were bent and 2 missing. I thought I snagged the bottom but it was dead calm.
I am sure it was a 36" catfish or less likely a foul hooked carp (but they are so scarce). I am going to make a shadow box for the screws and hang it on the wall in the living room next to the “don’t fish” on the sabbath picture. That will help me remember to check my drag next Sunday.
