Lindon Updates 3-27-13

I’ve always loved working on the learning edge while things are mostly prototype. That’s where ya see the most improvement and when they are fun and exciting. This toon project has been a blast so I’m really looking forward to getting it on a real lake instead of my pond. I started this project 3 years ago but didn’t have time or tools to finish so I was happy to get it wrapped up to where it should be a big improvement. Last fall I was kicking my toon upstream to my launch point after fishing in 30 some degree water for a couple hours and my legs started cramping up bad to the point I had to struggle to the side and crawl out and try to stop the pain. I just about didn’t make it back that trip so I’m thinking this motor will be great. Guess I’m getting too old to be able to kick faster than the river flows. Anyway I hope the first trip is at least half as fun as I’ve been anticipating and it will be a great day. Thanks again for the insight. J

“Noticed the wobble on the first whittie and looks like pink is still in.”

**:sunglasses:****Sorry. I failed to respond to that observation in my other reply. Since you kinda keep track of those things I’ll elaborate.

My first whitie…on the red glitter “jingle jig” was one of my larger ones. One of the other footlongs liked it too. And that jig caught two of my 14 inchers on the last trip. But virtually all other white bass were caught on the “pink fink”. I tried several different rigs and different colors but the pink as a dropper above another color seemed to be the producer for the day.

Pink catches them all year but it is especially good during colder water months.

We hit Lindon yesterday afternoon, and got skunked. We fished the north side of the dike and got not a nibble, nor a bite. Saw handfuls of other bank tanglers that were also yielding zilch. Great day, and not much wind to speak of. Still beats working though.

I took the boat out to warm it up for the season on UL on Tuesday. Launched at AF Harbor and drove to Saratoga Springs. Water temps 47 at AF and 50 near SS. That is some nasty looking water, still.

Is Deer Creek good for walleye this time of year or would April be better? Are they through with the spawn this year?

:sunglasses:**The walleye spawn at Deer Creek is about a month behind Utah Lake. Figure mid April into May. And it is also the scene of a big snagfest every year as the big females become vulnerable in the Provo River.

Serious walleye fans count June as the month when almost anybody can catch walleye. The are most often caught by bottom bouncing crawler rigs on the flats between the island and Charleston. But there are plenty caught along rocky shorelines by folks tossing crankbaits and plastics for bass. Also quite a few caught by bank tanglers soaking whole crawlers up off the bottom with a corky float.

The full moon in late June is the time and place to be fishing if you want a shot at a BIG walleye. They come in fairly shallow on the flats at the east end and fishing big cranks and swimbaits might get you a fish over 10 pounds. Lots of bigguns caught in late June or early July every year…depending on the lunar cycle.

Give a shout when you hit DC

Great report like always.

I wouldn’t mind catching a walleye out of Deer Creek. I’ll have to give it a try this year.

Maybe a flotilla the end of June or first of July??

Would a jointed Rapala hook a walleye? What colors would be best? I have some for trout but would like to get some others for perch or walleye.

Yes, jointed rapala will catch eyes. Color doesn’t matter.

Was thinking blue or silver/fluorescent chartreuse. Have a silver and a rainbow color jointed Rapala. I like a slow troll in reverse. I like to see them hit. It’s sort of like hitting a jackpot at a slot machine.

**Probably May-ish. I’d like to try for multi-species and everything gets more active in warmer water. But all the lakes will be turning on then so it will be tough to decide which direction to point my tube.

Cain’t abide DC once the power squadron hits.

:sunglasses:**Maybe a nighttime walleye trip…or very early morning. After Memorial Day that lake is not tuber friendly. There are water skiers and wakeboarders running the shoreline even before full light sometimes. And by mid morning it is full on frantic.

Stay in touch and we will watch the fishing reports and the weather for a good time.

**:sunglasses:Almost all shapes and colors of Rapalas will catch walleyes. One of my favorites is a perch colored shad rap…diver. But almost any color will catch them. The key is to find the fish and then be able to present the lures at the right depth and right speed.

Suspending jerk baits and big plastic swimbaits are favored by those after bigger fish. But dragging a crawler rig on the flats is money for a quantity of good eaters.
