I’m like you, but drop shotting I use 20# braid and a leader of 12# Seaguar fluorocarbon…
And drop shotting can it be called virtual (jiging) or how ever you place it I use it at the berry for the bigger bows and cuts in the 20" to 26" range…
I like to shake the rod tip about 3" to 5" while I move ever so slow or reel in slow while shaking, all you feel from trout is a sharp jerk or two (don’t stop)keep doing what you was till you feel weight then set the hook…
Thanks bassrods.
I wondered how you caught the trout up there on a drop shot. How long is you tag line,do you use any kind of meat or attractant on the jig?
So just reel it slow dragging it accross the bottom and shaking the rod tip,is this right?
"IMNSHO - Randy, if you happen to hook a fish of a life-time at Strawberry or somewhere else you have a good chance of having it break off before you can loosen the drag quickly enough. It is Ok for the drag to slip some while sitting the hook, just not Ok if it is so loose that it spins freely. At least that is the way that I see it. "
True! The drags are all worn on my reels so “locked down” for me still allows some drag. If I buy a new reel, I will need to “loosen it up just a bit”. Curiously, my favorite reel, is my el-cheapo $20.00 reel I bought from K-mart one day. It is a Mitchell Avocet and the rubber handle is nearly worn down to nothing. When the drag is locked down tight on it, it still allows some drag. I just ordered a brand new one from Bass Pro ($29.00, Avocet II) and am anxious to see if it comes that way from the factory! The drag is even worse on my nice Shimano Stradic! It’s worn so bad that I can’t even use it when fishing for Wipers!

Edit: Not sure how the quoting/editing feature messed up this post…The top part was written by Kent, then I added the bottom part…
The tag end is about 20" to 26" long, I like a longer tag for trout…
And the best lure I found to use is a Gulp minnow in 2 1/2" or 3" smelt…
I like to shake the rod tip about 3" to 5" while I move ever so slow or reel in slow while shaking,
As stupid as this might sound, your “shake” must be up and down? A side to side shake would not affect the movement of the lure, right? How could it? Move the rod tip left, move the rod tip right, doesn’t change the position of the lure.
Only up and down (i.e. pulling on the line) changes the position?
I don’t know how Bassrods fish, but when I am pulling flies, sometimes I will jiggle the rod left and right 6 inches. Any time you are pulling the line it will jiggle the other end. ![]()
Humpy
Yes it’s up and down. Side to side would give too much pleasure…[;)][fishin]
“Yes it’s up and down. Side to side would give too much pleasure…”
LMAO!!!![]()
Bunch of great info guys …
Here is a summary of a few things that I learned from you all that I may want to incorporate:
-
-Wrist snap rather than long full body hook sets- -Don’t necessarily drop all the way back to the bottom after a mis- -Cast tube jig out to where you see surface rolls- -Berry trout can be found a bit deeper (30’-45’) this hot time of year- -Tighten the drag a bit for better hook sets
And last, but not least: -
-Side-to-side may provide more pleasure than up and down!
berry fish are deeper than 45 cuts down to 60 on sunday on koke rig.? and side to side is alot funner. lol[fishin]
Pulling a fly isn’t the same as jiging, when you deep water jig and you jiggle it side to side its not the same movement to the lure as up and down..
But for fly fishing the side to side is much better…
