I recently purchased a vintage 10.5 ft. aluminum row boat with a 35lb trolling motor. My maiden voyage was on Hyrum lake last sunday. We caught one perch, the wifey lost my brand new rod holder over board, and I discovered some nice leaks in my new boat. I got back to the truck to discover a ‘stop mussels’ noncompliance warning. We’re having fun DangIT! [pirate]

I tried trolling a variety of cranks, spinners, and harnessed worms. I also tried bottom bumping with a worm harness on a walleye rig. We were out for 6 hour, up and down the trolling stretch. I saw another boat land at least 3 trout on the surface. Couldn’t tell what they were using, what speed they were trolling, or how far back off the boat they were, but they were doing it right.

Was wondering if someone couldn’t help me out. I had better luck with a bobber and worm off shore. I saw there was a jigging area too. What jigs work there and how do y’all present said jigs.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Can’t offer any advice, but since I’m hoping to make my first ever Hyrum trip today, I thought I’d jump on board.

Lucky it was just a warning and not a ticket.
You might consider taking the online exam, then you just print out a certificate one time, so you don’t have to fill out the form every trip.

Sounds like you were trying a lot of the right options. Where on the lake did you fish? What time? That can make a difference. Do you have a fish-finder?

Towards evening the inlet area is usually pretty hopping. Speed, depth, color - can all play factors. Towards dusk/dawn you might expect to find the trout shallower raiding the shores. During the heat of the, or when the powersquad descends - likely to move deeper.

There’s some good structure you can find some decent bass.
Good on ya finding a perch! They were pretty darned scarce this winter!

Fly-and bobber can produce. They like Pistol Peters, but I also had some hot action on an orange spoon in the fall.

From what I read, I am one of the few to take a perch. I was on the north stretch trolling nw to e and back. Wife had a fish on with a lipless silver rattle. I had a silver lipped crank on for awhile but when I brought it in, it had failed. Should had went back to that. Tried two cranks in fire-tiger. I see how the pistol petes might work well. Could I tie on a water bubble and troll slow with a 9 ft. leader behind it over the bug gulpers? I have seen a couple discussions about doing that with casting. What about trolling?

No fish finder. On a grad students budget, happy to be off the shore. We were out from just after dawn till the wake-makers pushed me off. My boat is pretty small.

Last time I was over there things had slowed a bunch from what it had been and the fish had moved. I’ll PM you with the location. I found that I had to go down to 18 to 24 feet deep on the rigger in about 30 foot deep water. Time of day was critical and not when I expected. Best bite was 9:30 to noon. I’ll add a few other details on the PM. But fish size is getting better we got a 17 and 15 inch’er and the rest were 12 to 14 and we caught 13 in about an hour and a half once they started biting. Good luck with the fish and better luck keeping from being swamped it’s getting crazy over there. Later J

Tiger Trout are tough to catch in Hyrum - I’ve caught them on little perch colored rapalas from shore.

Rainbow Trout I can almost catch everytime I go out by drowning powerbait.

Yellow Perch - small Jig & piece of worm

Bass- Crawfish colored jigs or perch colored crank baits.

I just live around the corner so we play over there a fair amount.Yesterday the 13"-14" bows in the pic (and larger marks on the fish graph) were right out in the middle between the swim beach and the large white rounded clay cliff on the opposite shore to the southwest. We had to troll leaded line to get down to them 25-40 feet. The closer to the dam, the less fish this time. We were using Rapalas and needlefish. The size 2 needlefish seemed to be the trick, no hits on the size 3’s. We tried yellows, greens, reds and mostly white ones, the mostly white one did the best for us yesterday. We picked up some 9" rainbows right around the swim beach but sent them back. It was too windy for any boat control with the electric so we didn’t Bass it much. We did pull into hell’s half acre (that teeny bay opposite shore from the boat launch) for a few minutes and the larger Bass were very active chasing little bass out of the water. Krocodile spoons and a little baby bass Rapala got us some hookups. Generally, to get to the larger trout you have to go deep with downrigger or leaded line. We have caught trout long lining mono but is much less productive, usually only works at sundown and mostly after it’s been recently planted. For Bass cast the shore lines with Rapalas, small plastics, or ever so slowly, gently bump a Carolina rigged live nightcrawler along. I keep seeing reports of the thousands of fingerling tigers they plant in there but have yet to catch one in Hyrum-just figured they fed the Bass.[:P] There is an occasional monster brown, especially in the spring, the perch run in their cycles some years it’s clear full of them and sparse others and I’ve seen other people pull buckets of small pan fish (I’m guessing green sunfish) from around the docks with a tiny jig or jigging a tip of worm. Enjoy.
