I’ve caught a few on jerk baits (silver lucky crafts) and small (03,05) rapalas in brown trout color. Caught a bunch on lipless cranks while bass fishing also.
Wow, I appreciate all the responses! Thanks guys for the tips. I am going to give it a try over the next few days. I have a source of hatchery 'bows that I can pick through and they still have eggs last time I checked… maybe I will harvest some roe from them.
The bull trout..I think they could be lockjaw because of spawning activity?? or maybe I need to target them during a different part of the day.
No bull trout in stanley lake as far as I know.. there is a trap/blockade installed at the outlet that prohibits fish from getting in or out.
Also, Brownliner, thanks for looking into that re: federal v. state rules on bull trout.. I was wondering that myself how exactly we are able to target them and get around the no harass/pursue rules of the ESA. Of course, Snake River Spring Chinook are also listed as threatened under the ESA, yet fishing for them is allowed when IDFG/NOAA opens up the season for them.
Also… here is a video I took two years ago of bull trout at Alturas.. saw the same thing a few days ago, except the fish have grown a little bit ![]()

the bulls wont spawn tell fall. as far as what part of the day. it has never seemed to matter to me. one day it will be great at noon. next day you cant catch a bite at noon, and will do great at 3. Yes there are bulls at stanley, I havnt caught anything big in a few years there but they are there.
OK, today I “unlocked the enigma” of bull trout to me. This evening I spent an hour casting all sorts of lures (could not acquire any roe after all). I seriously went through at least 6-8 lures of different types for NOTHING except a few kokanee followers. Then I put on the smallest, most insignificant lure and thought I’d give that a try. I don’t even know what it is, something out of grandpa’s tackle box. With this small lure I changed my presentation to just wiggling the lure across the gravel bottom, sight fishing it right in front of the noses of about 15-20 bull trout. I finally got one to bite! And… lost him on the 4lb test. Then a few min later, hooked another one and lost it. ![]()
By that time it was time for dinner, but I will be back and hopefully have a trip report now that I seem to have developed some technique, I hope to land one and get a photo. Oh yeah, And I’m bringing the 12lb test next time.
