# Hooking Perch Eyes?

How do you guys go about hooking perch eyes on hooks? Do you use single hooks, trebles? I’ve heard if you pop the eyes their useless, is this true? Thanks Guys

I have used them on both single hooks and on treble. My favored way to get them without ‘popping’ them is to bend the perch head backward in the middle, which seems to pop the eyes out to the side. A sharp knife behind the eye and you can remove it without deflating it. I hook not through the eye but through the tissue behind the eye.
That having been said, I have caught plenty of perch with a ‘flat’ eye, including one which has been used to catch two or three perch in a row.

The best days are when you catch 30+ perch, your out of worm, and just start pop out those eye too catch more of those suckers.
I’m surprised how big the perch are this year comparing too the other years.
It was some fun summer days. Fish 4-6 hr catch 20-39 perch, tons of dinker bass, and some nice bows
As well like he said just don’t deflate it and hook in the tissue socket. I like to use salmon egg #10 or #8 or a small pan fish J hook works amazing.

I wouldn’t say USELESS. Cutting them out without popping them isn’t too hard, but hooking them can be. I often end up with several destroyed eyes hanging shredded and limp on one hook. Hooking them at the back by the nerve attachment rather than through the iris and pupil helps. Putting them on a small salmon egg hook, you can kinda just roll the hook inside the eye, but that hides the hook point.
Generally, I find the hole where the nerve enters the eye, run the point inside and then out again quickly, minimizing damage.

Use a big swivel or a paper clip. Put them in from the side of te eye and spin it. It will scoop out the eye perfect and fast. Very clean and quick

A few years ago I bought a little perch eye tool from Sportmans Warehouse. It’s just a 3" wood dowell with a sharpened eye screw on one end. It works very well for plucking eyeballs out without popping them. I don’t know if they still have them. Wouldn’t be hard to make one. I’m not at home, but if you need, I can send you a picture later if you can’t round one up. Pretty handy. They only got a buck or two for them back then.

I received an eyeball remover as a Christmas present a couple years ago. Sounds the same as the one Jim describes only mine has a big end and a small end. I never really used it until this year. It works great and does not damage the eyes when pulling them out.

Yes sportsman on Riverdale still had them a week ago, just ask them, they will know what your talking about, this tool is about 5 bucks and well worth the money.[;)]

Humm. Guess I was ignorant of the idea that eyes were “useless” when deflated.
Then again, I guess the dozens of perch I caught on my last trip out on deflated eyes were ignorant of that fact too!!!
I can well understand that a real eye with depth, reflection, and realistic biometrics can be better than if deflated. But that doesn’t make them useless.

Using the thumb on the same hand and at the same time, you can wedge your thumbnail under the eyeball and it will pop out whole, most the time without even damaging the eyeball.
This is how I do it and it works great, no extra tools.

You can make an eye ball remover with a wood dowel and a small eye screw that can be purchased from the hardware store.
I bought a 3/8" x 3’ wood dowel and a box of eye screws for about $5.00 and made 12 tools.
I give them away when fishing.

I also have the perch eye remover doohicky from Sportsmans and they work great. I have also seen some old timers use the paper clip method and they cut it to about 3/4"-1" then insert it in the neck of a rifle cartridge case then smash the neck flat to secure the clip so only about 1/2" is sticking out to for the loop. Then they have a nice little handle for the eye remover.
