Tye Dye decided to go backcountry skiing this morning so I hooked up with Aquaman and headed for his favorite place…Little Dell. Got there by 9:30am and arrived to a closed gate, smoke on the water and snow around the banks. At 27 F it was a taste of ice fishing. A small hike around the lake to our spot revealed cutts crusing the bank like schools of bait fish. With the 1st cast came the 1st fish. Each retrieve we would watch 2 to 5 cutts fighting to take a bite of the lures. Never seen the Cutthroat Trout there so aggresive before. The water temp in the shade was 38F and 44F when we left. By 11am the cutts were no longer interested in the Gold Kastmaster so I switched to the Strike King Red Eye Shad in Baby Carp and it was fish on again. Ended up getting 15, the biggest being 16.5 inches and Aquaman got 9 before the clouds rolled in and the bites shut off at 1:30pm. Just about then both of Aquaman’s reels broke, so being the driver I decided to call it a day. He offered to stay and watch me fish but I told him that I did not want him to just sit there like a dog…to which he replied, “Whoof, Whoof”. On our way out we ran into BrookieGuy1 who was working the inlet on his float tube. On the other side of the lake we spotted In2Fishing with his kids. All day long we used Gold Kastmasters, Strike King Red Eye Shad in Baby Carp, Rainbow Countdown Rapala and a Black/Silver Rapala.

If the gate was closed how do you get in? My understanding is that it is supposed to be open by 8:00 a.m.

The main gate to the road side parking was open…however the gate that gets down to the water was CLOSED FOR THE SEASON. Honestly I like it when the 2nd gate is closed…it means the fee just turned into free! Go there in the morning…never seen so many cutts cruising the shores so aggressively before!

If only you knew In2Fishing was out there across from you. You could have taken a pic of that 20 inch cutty and the kids out there. Brookieguy1’s brookies too! BFT gathering again eh? Whoops I played hooky on that meeting!

Great now with that gate shut I am going to have a long walk with the pontoon parts!

I’m going to have to get up to Little dell maybe this week. Nice pic’s (as usual ) and detailed report. I always pass up the Shad in my Tackle box. Not sure why, Maybe its time I start tossing them too.

Man - I’m on fish overload just looking at 'em all! Glad someone got out and wetted a hook this weekend. Looks like more active fall troutses!

Thanks for the post. Another water I should add to MY bucket list of places to go. When they are charging a fee - do they take the “parks” pass?

PS: Ever seen those wheels that attach to a pontoon for portaging?

They have their own pass and it is $50. Not the same pass as Uinta’s or Rockport/Deer Creek/Jordanelle..etc.

A wheel on a pontoon would work if you follow the trail which zig zags all the way down making a very long trek. It is almost straight down from upper parking lot to water. Might be easy enough getting the boat down as we have dropped ours over the side from the east lower parking lot, but the trip BACK is the major problem.
It is also a very long way down from that upper parking lot.
A float tube would be the answer.

A float tube would be the answer.
Not for the twins. Bad knees make the fins a no go. Evil Tye Dye will be able to use them again but the “up motion” for me is never going to happen. Lesson here is don’t mess up you meniscus folks.

Ugh it is frustrating that the State Parks pass doesn’t work. In fact when they are charging at Little Dell they won’t make change and they won’t take cards and checks.

CYS now is the time to hit Little Dell!!![fishin]

Thanks Coyote…it was a great morning up there. Little Dell is a little gem in the fishing world that is more than worthy of your bucket list. I have recieved some PM’s from people wishing that I would keep LD a secret, however it is all catch and release for the cutts so I am not worried. You should go there soon…we saw a huge 2-3 foot cutt cruising the shore, we threw our tackle boxs at him and he did not even flinch. Hmmm…he must know he is protected!

Let me know when you want to go up there. We would gladly show you around and B.S out on the bank with ya. The baby carp shad was the HOT lure of the day. There are no carps in there however the fish don’t know that! Orange and black or gold is what they attack there. That was my 1st early morning mission to LD and I must say…that is best time to catch the cruising cutts.

Why do you feel this way? Because it is C&R it can handle more pressure?

What about people that don’t know how to C&R?

Seeing how you are inviting people and certainly nothing wrong with that, you can also show them that Barbless single hook (no trebles) and wet hands (because their slime is their survival along with not out of water too long) is a good idea?

</div>

Fair question Flygoddess…I feel that C and R lakes can handle the pressure for several reasons…

1. They are catch and release only, so taking of a protected Cutt is a Class B Misdemeanor. Sure at Little Dell a cutt or 2 is poached but that is far and few inbetween.

2. Little dell is stocked every 2 years with 100,000 plus Cutthroat Trout. Making the overall population well over 200,000 by now.

3. People know how to catch and release a fish. If they know how to tie a knot then I am sure they can remove a hook.

4. Little Dell is 249 acres and its volume capacity is 20,500 acre-feet, so it can handle a few extra fisherman a week on the bank and water.

Now I agree that one should wet their hand to release a fish, and that they should consider a single barbless hook. In that arena it is up to the angler. Personally I use trebles so that the fish does not get away on the retrieve in. I have fished with anglers who choose to use singles and anglers who choose to use trebles.

thats not always true. walk the banks of the berry at ice off and look at all of the dead slot cutts that have had their guts ripped out by bait dunkier, or have had their gills ripped out by hardward fisherman.

+1 releasing a fish and releasing one that will survive is not always the same.

Interesting, I was up there with my buddy (not sure what his username on here is, but he’s the Filipino who looks like a little Mexican – he’s fished w/ the twins before) and he said he could see your hair. We walked by the small family fishing from the shore - probably started fishing a little too closely to them at first, sorry about that - and then headed up toward the creek that flows in. (saw the float tuber walking along the shore as well – man, small world) Anyhow, we hooked a few cuts on gold KM’s and I picked a few up with a black/green wooly bugger with a size 12 pheasant tail dropper. We then decided to hit the creek for some Brookies. Spent almost two hours making my way up the creek only to spook a few and hook into three little guys. I headed back to the lake with approx an hour of real daylight left, and man, it was ON. Wooly bugger with the same PT dropper was the ticket. The Cutties were cruising the shallows and were super aggressive. I finally had to stop because it was getting too dark to see, but I landed 15 in that hour and had upward of 30 strikes that I missed.

My hands were FREEZING.

I caught all but three fish on the PT dropper, which I thought was strange. Several were foul-hooked in the back and head, so they were hitting the wooly bugger, but not real hard – and then got snagged on the dropper.

I think you are talking about Marathonman. Is this the guy?

Glad to hear that there were even more BFT’ers up there. I must have really missed out. Generally my twin and I show up around 2pm and fish till dark. Glad to hear the evening session is great as well as the morning session!

I heard In2Fishings kid scared you off, that little guy makes a great energizer bunny! In fact he might be “into fishing” more than his old man!

Just goes to show now is the time to hit Little Dell! If you have ever considerd it NOW IS THE TIME!!!

I have never seen trout so aggressive in the morning before. Woulda joined you for the evening session but Aquaman broke not 1 but 2 of his reels. That and I lost my golden ticket…the baby carp lure. I will be heading back soon. Hard to pass up hungery trout like that!
