7X, 6X, 5X, etc are diameter measurements. Breaking strength (2lb, 4lb, 6lb test), while related to diameter is a separate consideration. For example, 2X diameter Maxima might only have 6 or 8lb breaking strength while most 2X trout tippets (Orvis Super Strong, Rio Powerflex, etc) are more like 11 lb breaking strength.
The diameter is most important in considering what tippet to use with a particular size of fly. For example, throwing a size 6 hopper or stonefly with 6X would be problematic because the fine diameter would tend to twist on the back cast. Conversely, a size 20 BWO is difficult to present properly with the 3X that would probably work quite well for the hopper. Notice that this discussion on tippet diameter makes no mention of breaking strength.

Tippet material is thinner, but generally stronger, that is the plus to the higher price.
Nothing I worry about till I do hit the smaller sizes like 6X and 7X.
In other words, I fish #30 and #32’s, it is hard to thread 2 lb. through the eye, but 6X is no problem.

3 times the diameter size plus or minus 1 or whatever = fly size to use.
6x diameter= 16 to 18 to 20 fly
5x = 14 to 16
and so on so on and so forth. ( Horton the Elephant)
if you dont know the diameter you can divide the size of the fly by three and come up with the size line to use..

Love those browns! In case you’re not aware, there’s a whole write-up on posting pictures that’s very helpful. From the Utah Fishing General forum, click on Sticky: ARCHIVES & HELP DESK. Then Click on Help Desk Index, and finally Pictures. If you have editing software of any kind, you really should resize your pictures to a much smaller size before posting so they’ll fit on the screen, and come up a whole lot faster so you won’t have to wait a long time to see them.[;)]
As far as the knots go, the one I use to attach the fly to the tippet is the Davy knot. Its break strength is incredible and its the fastest and easiest of all the fishing knots.
Thanks, it looks like the Davy Knot is fast and easy. I googled Davy Knot and found a video clip that shows a really fast easy way to tie it.
