I am not disagreeing with you on this but.. I have never tried it so when I get them in I will.. however.. and if anyone is a fly fishing purist.. dont read this part…[:)]
I was checking on line about the pistol pete.. and several sites reccommend using the bubble float/fly rig on a spinning rod.. I can tell you from my limited experience with this type of rig that it would defintiely work well with the pistol pete.. if nothing else I could cast that further out and work it in slowly with a spinning rod than I can currently using a fly rod.. but…
I am doing my darndest to not use anything but the fly rod.. with being skunked so much it is very tempting to put the fly rod aside and use a spinning rig.. but then Id lose the challenges that fly fishing gives me.. and that is what I like about the sport…
Hey there M55 I didn’t know the answer that is why I posed the question. Likewise a read somewhere that a bubble float can be used but I don’t recall what type of rod was being used. Be darned if I would throw all that hardware with a fly rod. I would rather use a popper. I’ll ask my pro the next time I see him.
I agree that all of that would be too much hardware on a fly rod.. may as well set that rod aside and go back to my “OLD WAYS of the WORM”… and I dont mean the sjw… [;)]
I am thinking this is one is one where I may have to rent a boat and come in close to shore so that I cast into the shallows and am able to bring it back out to the deeper water. or is my thinking backwards on that??
First off, guys it is no difference casting a pistol pete than any other woolly bugger. Slow down, larger loops. Now, Macfly, we have had this discussion many a time. Does using a flyrod, line, etc make it fly fishing or is it the fly? I know guys that fish a worm with a fly rod and line. I personally think it is the fly. You call baitcasters anyone using a worm, powerbait, eggs, ect. You call a person using a jig, jig fishing, and a person throwing spoons, mepps, ect. fishing LURES. So, if you are using a FLY, does it matter how you get it out there? Are you FLY fishing?
Hey there FGD you answered my question - & that is make bigger loops. Like it would apply to casting a Clouser Minnow. Even the 10s 12s & 14s are rather heavy with those dumbbell eyes.
I think I may have to sell all of my old ones just to remove the temptation……
… and I will be honest here.. I have learned quite a bit in the last day or so..and about different things such as flies to use.. what to look for.. cycles and timing of hatches.. etc… is surprizing what a person can learn..even an old dog like me…
Hey macfly55. The pistol petes work well because they cause sound waves to be transmitted. A big Bass will concentrate on these sound waves and make his plan of attack.
The Clousers have a special presentation just for Bass. I would have to show you in person because it is hard to explain over a Keyboard.
Presentation mean everything. Sound means more. Vibrations are the ultimate.
Do you use Rattles on you Clousers?? They already sell some that are called Rattle Rousers.
Zonkers are good, Bunny tails and rabbitt leaches.
