Fallen through the ice

well this is no regular hero , for he did not expect praise nor glory for his deed . he simpley knew it was the one thing he had to do . his actions during both attempts of the rescue were more than enough to classify him as a hero , but to walk away from public recognition brings forth extreme honor to the word " hero " .

if he is ever found , i think the president of these United States of America should be notified of his actions . this young man is truley a national treasure .

Doug Sauer is the name of the young man who jumped in to the lake around marean city saving the life of 49 year old Mike Good of warren michingan

Doug was also wearing a life jacket and carying a 100 feet of rope.

Mike Good was in the water 20 minutes before he was rescued by Doug and is in the hospitol doing well.

two more deaths

teen aged boy and girl found dead.

the girl crawled out and got about 200 yards before colapsing and dieing from exposure. the boy never came up.

this was lake minataka. bring the death count for michigan this year to 13

4 more snowmobilers went thru the ice at houghton lake yesterday , all got out safley . ice in areas is only 1/2 " thick .

the two brothers that went thru last weekend at houghton lake have not been found yet , recovery attempts have been unsucessfull

the search for the one remaining snowmobiler that disapeared thru the ice two weeks ago in long lake has been halted until the spring . sonar equipment was used to try to locate him .

was at the foote dam and the pond above today , saw some igit on the ice in his midsized car shooting across the ice doing power-slides and donuts , what surprised me was that the other icefishermen left there sleds at the shore , i guess the thought of going thru the ice has reached most of the angelers out there . some people just don’t get it though .

he was a pretty lucky dude and pretty lucky to have a kid that kjnew what he was doin. and the other people too. i know i,m glad i ain,t out there this year/ it,s crazy here too.

number twelve was pulled up by the sea wall at south ridge airforce base this morning out of lake st clair.

aperently he had gone out alone, and no one missed him at the end of the day. no one knew when the man had fallen through. but fisherman had pulled him up to bring the death count up to 12

well we add six more folks today going through the hard water.

these folks chose a different style than most, they desided to play car tag on the ice. Ancor bay to be spicific.

a pick up and a mini fan fall through, fortunatly no one was hurt or worse.

we had three fishermen go thru the ice ( all well ) this weekend just 10 miles south , i have 20" of ice up here , what a diference even a little bit of distance makes .

20 inches of ice here too, but still on moving water you can never tell what kind of ice it is.

the top 4-5 inches of ice is hard but the rest of it seems to be softer than usual, I can feel the difference when I am cutting through it.

mine is a spring fed lake , but untill this past weekend had no snow , now 10" of snow with a layer of thin ice on that . insulation factor may change everything in a few days , will let you know .

yesterday (sunday) a dozen shanties fall halfway through the ice and flow out in to ancor bay on a ice flow.

today on commerce lake a shanty falls halfway through the ice,

as to whether or not if any one is in the shanties or not know one realy knows for sure.

it is important to lift your shanties up off the ice and set them on blocks to allow the cold air to refreze the ice every day. this is important, or at least move your shanty once a week. and block off the old holes so no one falls through.

just wanted to remind everyone that ice-out will come on us in a flash , be carefull out there , not one fish is worth your life !

AIRBOAT FUNDRAISER:

The Grand Traverse County sheriff’s department hopes to raise more than $35,000 dollars this summer to buy an airboat for its dive team. The department kicked off a community fund raising campaign today. Sheriff Scott Fewins decided to get the airboat after his officers had a tough time recovering the bodies of two snowmobiles who drowned in Long Lake this winter. The ice conditions on the lake made it nearly impossible for the team to get near the scene. Fewins plans to buy a boat like this which was designed for those conditions.

wow they are eather getting a dam good deal on one or they are buying a cheep hovercraft. the 8 man craft perchased by the dnr at port huron by shout ridge airforce base cost around 50 G’s last year. they can use it both summer and winter.

eather way eather recue by hellicopter or hover craft on lake st clair the cost of the ride is the same… $400 + leaving your catch and all your gear behind on the burg.

THIS ONE IS A DEEP V HULL CABIN CRUISER WITH ONE OF THOES FLORIDA SWAMPBOAT PROPELLER AIR ENGINES ON IT , IT SCOOTS ALONG THE ICE AND FLOATS IN THE WATER . PRITTY NIFTEY ! GOES LIKE A BAT OUT OF HADIES TOO !!

I think they are going the wrong way on this one.

them hovercrafts are ideal for just about any resque, ice snow water 10 & 1/2 inches of slush.

they had one down here on proud lake and a boy was killed on one from a freek flip. (wind factor) I know up that way there is far greater winds than on a small inland lake.

sounds like they may be putting a lot of people at risk including the resque team.

them air boats are designed for crusing over marsh and reeds and only streat aways on open water.

the hovercraft can crouse in any direction, pass over most any serface including wet grass. has the ability to handle a large resque team and equipment.

both are noisy as a hellicoptor.

on the air boat you can quadruple the wind chill factor. this may bring up the number of resque fatilities to an all time high.

there actually pretty stable , there a regular cabin cruiser with that engine set up on the back . they use them on thoes white water rapids out west too . what makes it more effective is that it can climb over the built up ice shelves , go over the snow drifts , and can launch anywhere the engines can be shut off to without fear of sinking .they showed it on the news here , it was pretty amasing .

this is deffinatly an animal I havent seen. I would like to see a pic of this if you come across one.

I’LL TRY TO FIND ONE .
