gb i love to see the big hens released as much as anyone. but just cause you havnt seen us fish doesnt mean that we dont release the big onces.
The walleye population is a great thing in the bear as you stated. I wish the f&g would give it a booste maybe plant some every 5 years or even more offten. I wish the idaho side would do something. Hell they dont even recognize that they spawn in the bear river. They plant around 150,000-500,000 in oneida res every year. but below the damn there is no limit on them and its up to the fisherman to regulate them. I know alot of fisherman who do a great job on them and we all try to spread the word but it only take a few to ruin it.
I am sure that carp are a great food source for the walleye but the problem is a carp grows to fast so after the first year all they are doing is competing. I dont know for certain that a carp will eat a walleye fry but i know they eat perch fry and after all they are related.
What i would like to see done is a walleye foundation in cache valley and maybe then they could put some pressure on the f&g for both states to regulate them a bit more. I would love to see a 2 fish limit, and a 25 inch max. Or maybe even catch and release during the spawn. I am glad to see that others are concerned about the eyes in the bear.
i would like to see them do something with the catfish also. I was talking to a guy last night on the idaho side that was telling me about catching 38 in one night last year. I didnt think much about it thinking 38 is to many to keep but he followed that up by “It took us 2 hours to fillet them”. I said you kept them all!!! He replied well we threw the small onces back.
Ya, but the catfish were here first. The carp were here first too. If we can start a fishery with this many walleye, why fix something that isn’t broken. Just manage it better. We all want to catch more walleye. And I agree with you all that we don’t want to over harvest, a picture lasts longer than a full belly. But still fishinma, I want to know when that picture of the three walleye was taken. PS-keep on rippin lip!
Are there walleye all through the Bear River, even in Wyoming? i know someone planted them in Sulphur Creek reservoir in Evanston, but never knew they were in the Bear River. Love those walleye filets in beer batter..mmmmmmmm good!
Did you catch a lot of crappie? I fished there today and caught about a 3 lb. bass, but no crappies, the water temp seemed right but the crappies didn’t want to play today.
I can’t believe those people were doing that with the muskie. Sometimes I really hate people. I seriously don’t know what I would do if I ran into a similar situation. Well, the kids I caught trying to jab the kokanee with stick up above Porcupine got a pretty nice string of obscenities, but adults should really know better. And seriously, do you really need 38 catfish? I’m getting pretty disgusted with people’s attitudes toward wildlife and nature in general. I was at Cutler on Thursday and there was so much trash everywhere. Not only that, but there were two guys throwing the poor mudcats at the over pass bridge. Come on, what are you 12? I know they’re small, but I’m pretty sure they’re still considered a game species in Utah. Too bad the fish and game didn’t catch them. I didn’t realize what they had been up to until they’d left or I would have called the poaching line. Sorry, I’m just fed up with all the trash up here in Cache.
I know what you mean about all the trash at cutler. People treat it like the dump. Oh, and catch and release for mudcats IS bouncing them off the bridge and into the water, so lighten up.
earl if you want to kill the mudcats i dont have much of a problem but throwing them off a wall isnt very humane. Expecaly when you would say that on the same posts that we have been talking about fish conservation.
Sorry, I do have a temper that flares now and then. When I said “kids” jabbing the salmon, I mean teenagers. I get rather protective of fish and wildlife, and I just want people to have a little respect for our natural resources. Killing carp is all well and good. They’re a non game fish and they’re destructive. You know there are a lot of people, in Utah especially, that think the only game species are trout. How would you feel if people were killing bass? I’ve talked to plenty of people that consider perch a trash fish, and they throw them on the bank. That’s a waste. Besides, I don’t really like fishing next to a bunch of rotting carcasses. Killing fish and leaving them on the bank is just in poor taste.
Just so you know I don’t throw mudcats against the bridge. In fact, when I take my scouts or kids fishing out there I have them throw everything back. It just rubbed me wrong when you went off about calling the DWR on the guys you saw. The warden has alot more to worry about than some “poor mudcats”. And if the warden did get after me for killing a trashy mudcat I would tell him to lighten up. Go flyfishing up on the Logan with all the rest of your purist buddies.
Ha, I actually did go flyfishing up the Logan the day after the mudcat massacre. It was a much more pleasant experience, but I still have to say there was too much trash up there. I’m glad you don’t personally throw fish at the wall and that you teach your scouts to practice catch and release. I don’t have any problem with harvesting fish to eat, it just bugs me when people think it’s funny to torture and kill an animal, just because it’s not their intended quarry for the day. My first fish was a bullhead and it’s what got me into fishing in the first place, so maybe I’m over protective. School and work have been crazy, and I’ve been really stressed. So when I made it out for a couple of hours before work, I guess I was just irritated to find piles of garbage and people hucking fish into bloody pulps. It rubbed me the wrong way.
I would eat the mud cats rather than kill them and leave them. When I was about 12 years old my dad had taken me and a freind down the the jordan fishing. The mud cat bit was hot within about 45 minutes time we had 15 or so of them. I had them all on a willow stringer to show my dad. I asked him what we should do with them, he said lets cook’m and eat’m! I wasn’t to sure about that but he taught us to clean them, skin them and then cut there heads of in that order. We had a little home made camper there with a stove, a cast iron pan, some bacon grease, salt, pepper and some garlic powder. The fish being so fresh curled in the pan, I thought they were still alive, you know being catfish but dad said it was because they were so fresh. Well I must say that made a fish eater out of me! Fine fine table fair those mud cats are. It’s just to bad they call them “mud” cats rather than golden cat or frying cats! Yes sir fine tasty white flesh!
