I remembered fly goddess talking about the Halloween the other day and tied my version of something black and orange also one that kinda looked like a montanna stone and another black and blood red. I didnt have a chance to test them yet so i didn’t post pic of them. I was also thinking about doing one in red and white. thanks for the suggestion and offering up the material I greatly appreciate it.
wow those are some increditable photos thanks
Always open for suggestions of if ya have a color combination that works well post it up
Its just about the same thing as tying jigs and absolutely you can troll them with flasher , leadcore or action disk , fish them on a clear bobber, or cast from shore with split shots or sliding sinker. I have done all of the above with success. there isnt a wrong way to fish them

cool thanks, didn’t know for sure if you could…

Man Drowning you have been very busy. The testing must be going good with how many new buggers you are coming up with. I haven’t fished with buggers in a long time and I think that I’m going to start again just to try it. I love tying them just haven’t used them. They are about the easiest fly to do. You have really opened my eyes as to what different color variations to try. I will tie some up and post some pictures to see what you think.
I have been busy but its been fun. Ive tied over 150 different combinations. There fun to fish with and everyone should have a few in there box. Use a few you will be surprised how well they work. Absolutely i would love to see them.
Well i was kinda bummed with the blue ones they didn’t catch many fish, it may have been they didn’t care for them today but the green and orange, gray and tan brown did excellent .
Nope not weaved its easier than that, but bear with me cause im camera shy and just remember i never claimed to be an expert fly tier lol . The recent ones i have made have been un weighted because i fish them on lead core line. the ones i fish with my fly pole are weighted and and how much depends on the size of the hook. I try to stay 1/4 inch away from the eye and the bend in the shank and keep them spaces evenly from the ends so the fly stays horizontal in the water. thanks and your very welcome
I didn’t get any pics of the fish today But used my go pro and im kinda getting frustrated with it. every time i think i have the fish in the pic I come home to find out i missed it. so i guess this will have to do [frown] should be finished processing shortly
I thought that was how you were tying them, but they looked woven in the pictures. You must have fluffier chenille than I do! I tie one that is black with a red stripe but the red is smaller and doesn’t cover the full back. It is a very effective fly too, but doesn’t look as good as yours.
I am going to be experimenting with some of your color combinations. They’re great! Wooly Buggers are just so amazingly effective in just about any color. It’s fun experimenting with them.
Thanks for taking the time to tie one and video it. I really appreciate it.
I enjoyed the video of the fishing too. I had to laugh at how fast those fish zoomed away when you released them.
Thanks, yup thats how i do it and i also switch and run some on the belly of the fly instead of the back. The chenille is a medium but large works great if you have it. These are big flys tied on a 4x long shank and a number 4 hook. I will have to try one of those and see how it works.
I hope some of them work for you I know the blood red and pink purple chartreuse is my favorite so far, they always seem catch fish.
No problem at all both videos were kinda fun to make and those fish were in a big hurry lol
I would suggest trying a an olive body with burnt orange grizzly hackle, and a burnt orange tail - a combination like that found on the most popular version of Denny Rickard’s Seal Bugger. Tying instructions for the Seal Bugger are available online, you might want to try tying it and testing against your best Woolly buggers, I am a huge believer in the Seal Bugger. Use SimiSeal dubbing or something like it as a seal fur substitute (Angora goat mixed with fine-cut flash is a great way to make your own SimiSeal.) My $0.02.
Very cool thread.
DF,
Been meaning to tell you how much I’ve enjoyed your thread here. More due to your studied approach than to the subject of wooly buggers! There is a scientist in you yearning to get out! Thanks for all the generous sharing.
Did I notice correctly that you were trolling leaded line? Kali and I fished Magic for the first time on the 5th of June last year. We limited easily, but other boats were struggling. When two different boats came up to us wondering what we were doing differently, we discovered it was all about depth. They were fishing the surface, figuring with the still cool water that the fish would be on top. Wrong! So, when does the book on wooly bugger fishing come out?!! Mike
I will pick some of the stuff necessary to tye the seal bugger. I have seen them before but never made one. do you use a dubbing loop or loose wrap the seal ? I have never been real good with the loop [:p] thanks
Thanks I have always loved making and catching fish on stuff you can make yourself and its pretty neat to catch them on things that you consider so wild colored you would think it would never catch something.
You did we switched a couple years ago when we were getting skunked on many trips because the fish were holding 20 foot + down. I did a lot of research and my answer to the problem was a 7 foot ugly stick medium light okuma classic pro and 12 pound lead core with a 50 foot leader of 8 lb fluorocarbon. It will hold a full core and 50 yards of powerpro 30lb backing. You still feel the fish fight a lot and don’t even feel like your using a lead core pole. A lot of times when your fishing a couple colors you can recover the lead core fast enough all of your fight is on the mono.
I was pretty proud of my daughter the other day she is 10 and her and i was fishing at minadoka and she asked soon as we got to out spot, how deep I told her and said i see fish at 17 feet she walked over to her pole and said 3 colors out to do it
Hey a book is an idea i will be rich and famous beyond my dreams and fish will stand in line to get on my hook.
Glad you enjoyed it and i hope it keeps going with lots of testing and input from the forum
I used to use a loop, but I just dub direct to the thread and velcro the hell out of them after the head dries.
I’ve also fallen in love with using stretch floss for the rib material on dubbed-body leeches and the like.
I use a piece of sticky-back velcro wrapped the around the end of a small dowel for larger flies and a little strip on the end of a plastic spoon handle for smaller flies, works great for shagging-out dubbing.
