I just started eating fish from Utah lake a couple years ago when I moved out there. So far, I only have a slight glow that shows thru my belly. It comes in handy when night fishing, or getting up in the night. Someday I hope to have the beaming glow that Tubedude boasts. He kind of glows like a lantern in the dark. Tubebabe is always making him go out and sleep on the couch because the light keeps her awake.
I once caught a channel cat from Utah Lake and I myself noticed something incredibly odd. Right on the fishes skin was the United States Constitution!
I can’t prove this scientifically though, sorry.
Me would sayeth that dos fishems say tat dey tasty to me tummy. I me wusn’t gonna worry about zee bwain damwage. Or my wex life does nots gets affected. My wex live on and on. I wove da womenz!
I would be wary of fish from many waters. Utah Lake being one of them. I can agree with TubeDude…but I would eat fish out of Utah Lake only once a year. Twice would be OK …for me.
But I have read from a health consultant that PCB can affect the sex organs. But by the looks of Utah counties healthy reproduction rate. I would have an awful hard time telling whether the sex lives of those eating fish from Utah Lake is gonna affect humans health. And I’m sure those that eat fish from the lake have no problem with “making babies”. Never heard of any “malfunction”.
But its a good idea not to eat lots of fish from Utah Lake…just in case.
It was like 40 yr. ago I caught a bunch of big bullhead by Pelican Pt. late in the summer. I just skinned them & was starting to fry them when these little skinny white worms started popping out of the flesh. Ugh! I tossed the whole shebang. A couple years later I was telling an old timer about it & he said that once in a while that’ll happen late in the summer when the water gets really warm. He told me it only affected the bullheads and to go ahead & eat them, they are OK. Since then I’ve caught & eaten a lot of Utah Lake fish & I’m still kicking. Be 69 in March. I dunno if I could eat 'em if I saw the worms popping out of them. I’ve also eaten a lot of bluegill & bass outta Pelican Lake with those little parasite nodules in them.
I too am an old feller. I don’t know about eatin’ the fish, but I saw this feller kissing them one day at the boat harbor. I should have asked him if he got worms.
Nope. Skinless fillets. Caught 'em about mid June from the AF boat harbor. If it were something like anchor worms or leaches I would have been okay. These were living in the flesh, not on it. Once they’re cooked, it probably doesn’t make any difference anyway. Just another form of protein.
I don’t mind if you guys eat fish from Utah Lake. It makes the streets safer when you guys glow at night. Saves us on electricity too. I hope you guys won’t mind if I pass on it though.
Just thought I would put my two cents in, I work for the dwr, and participated in the study of the fish in the lake, there were trace amounts of mercery and pcb’s found in the carp, and channel cats, due to the fact that they are bottom dwellers and eat all of the garbage in the lake, the other fish the feed upon the cats and carp also had trace amounts of the toxins. There are also parasites in most of the fish but are not harmful as long as they are fully cooked. The dwr recommends that people do not consume more that 8 oz. per month inorder to avoid getting cancer. This was actually printed in the tribune in the fall of 06. Hope this helps.

If’n ya cook 'em before they raise their nasty little heads out of the flesh, you’ll probably never know that ya ett ‘em. Who knows, maybe they are the best tastin’ part of the fillet. If ya ever get one without the parasites, you might not like the taste.
Ive harvested walleye and channel cat from the UTL
Good eats!
I think most water ways have some levels of mercury so it may not be a good idea to feed some fish to kids or pregnant women.
There was a UTL documentary on PBS a few years ago,
the UTL use to be chuck full of trout.
I think these kids have been eating the fish?
FishinChic-
Couple questions for you.
When they test a fish for pcb’s, mercury, parasites etc.. How do they do it? Do they test the fillet, the fat, or the skin or somehow test the whole fish.
If it’s tested in parts, is there a part of the fish that is less likely to have the mercury or PCB? Seems like I read somewhere that a lot of the bad stuff is absorbed and stored in the fat of the fish.
When they look for parasites, how to they determine that? And do they verify which parasites they are carrying?
Just curious. I have never been sure how they determine their results.
Thanks
sorry about the late reply but thanks for the good laugh (glowing comment)[;)]. That is wierd I wonder if they just died out since then or what, but have never seen them recently. sounds like you did back then though,
Jed
Next time you fillet a kitty don’t cook it, or freeze it immediately. Let it stand in the fridge for 24 hours and take another look.
Thanks for all the information but I am seriously sick of you guys going back and forth on this one. I have a great idea, if you like fish as much as I do eat as much as you want from where ever you get it from. If you don’t then don’t eat it it is your choice you don’t have to push your beliefs on anyone.
I will choose to eat as much as I can. The twitching thing and the glowing thing was a joke for all you who took it serious. I love how most of you joke with each other. anyway I really think enough was said about this we are free and old enough to choose what we want.

I did that this last summer, on a couple different occasions. Nada, nothing happened. Big cats too. Still nothing…
All fish from the West side of the lake.

I have had hundreds of pounds of catfish fillets in my refrigerator for more than 24 hours before cooking or smoking them. And, I alway do a final rinse and inspection before preparing them for the heat.
I HAVE NEVER SEEN EVEN ONE CREEPY CRAWLY…ON ANY CATFISH FILLET FROM UTAH LAKE.
**Look partner, we have allowed you that you had a bad experience. Now drop it. Nobody else is claiming to have seen any of that stuff and it IS NOT A PROBLEM. **
**If you choose not to consume Utah Lake fish, that is your prerogative. Don’t attack or belittle people who do not share your beliefs. **
