Trout anglers were experiencing some of those days when you just can’t buy a bite. To make matters worse, you could see the fish swimming around, but just couldn’t find the magic combination to turn them on. Although trout fishing was tough for most folks recently, there are good numbers of fish in the upper end of the river. Bead-head pheasant tails, olive, size 16 seemed to do pretty well and Griffith’s Gnat dry fly took a few fish as well. Crickets are the best bait to use for bream. Beaver Lake fishing has been pretty decent for stripers around Point 5 and Point 6 trolling live shad or extra large minnows. White Bass fishing at night under lights with live shad is a sure way to fill your freezer if you like the idea of cleaning a hundred or so fish. Smallmouth fishing on Beaver is good, thanks to several years of stocking efforts. Nightcrawlers make good live bait.

Little Missouri River: Local fly-fishing guide Jeff Guerin said the fish have not been kind lately. After the weekend’s storms they days have been beautiful with a little northerly breeze. And what little breeze we do get has been beneficial as far as action is concerned. Of course, we’re talking about the end of one of the biggest holidays of the year and I have no idea how many people were out playing in the water over the weekend, and getting the fish all spooked. Try casting a Griffith’s around the Triangle and the Trough. Copperhead Crossing has had quite a few fish rising as well.
