Correct methods to target big fish.

Big fish to me are over 20 inche. 14 and 15 inch fish are fun and all but there’s nothin better than a 20+ inch fish on. I have caught maybe a dozen that fit in to my big fish category.

I appreciate all the information that has been poted im going to put it all together and figure out these big fish!

Now that you have defined a big fish, you should consider fishing Strawberry. Most trips the average cutthroat caught is usually right around 20 inches. There are lots of tips on here about how to catch the fish at Strawberry, but my favorite method is vertically jigging with tube jigs tipped with cut bait. Of course it helps to have some type of flotation devise.

Mine too…only in FF it is called deep nymphing and I use small Chironomids and not tipping (the hook at any rate…LOL)
It is a great system. But you will have to admit, the faster you can get it down, the bigger the fish. I have to put weight on to get past the dinks and on to the big ones.

My thoughts are maybe some micro popgear followed by a F3 rapala? or wedding rings?

I can’t speak for all bodies of water, but for quite awhile after getting a boat I almost exclusively trolled at Strawberry. I caught my share of fish; however, I noticed after I was taught how to vertically jig that I caught, on average, larger fish vertically jigging that I had been catching trolling.

I have fished both Rapalas and Wedding Rings up there and both caught the same size of fish. Certainly, if you use a large enough lure you will catch fewer fish; however, most of the ones you do catch will be larger. Part of the reason for catching smaller trout trolling is undoubtedly related to the depth the lure is running. Often, the smaller fish are higher in the water column. I don’t like to troll really deep (45’ and deeper) for trout (macks are not trout) because bringing them up from the deeper water can be fatal for them. This is especially true when fishing during the warm summer months.
