In my pic there is one strap under the seat front attaching both the pvc frame and the metal toon frame. When I get on the water I plan on having 6 different straps to hold the pvc frame to the toon frame. I figure have an extra one or two. This project is still in its infancy.
Thanks for the heads up about turning the tm head. But now im much more concerned with the rear weight and the battery location. Im curious if I could lift the seat up and install the battery directly under me, to help with weight distribution?
You raise the seat more than it is already and you are not only going to effect the balance, but be more wind resistant and very hard not only to use flippers, but rowing is compromised. And I do recommend taking oars as at least one is part of the Coast Guard ruling which I have never questioned, and electronics can not be relied on 100%.
I have been on rough water where the motor was out of the water as the waves rolled by. Also been on water where the hair on my arms is standing up. These things can come up fast and require you get off the water fast. Oars are your life line.

I really appreciate all the insight. I didnt think about the difficuly of kicking while so high out of the water. I will just keep the oars handy on the toon at all times.

The only lake in San Diego that gives you a “back country” feeling is Barrett and it cost a minimum 120$ for one person to fish for the day,180$ for 4 guys. But its worth it.
My hubby put one of those seat extensions on his boat last year, so I now know all about that first hand. He has two seats and those butterfly nuts so he can change out the seat pretty easy for different situations. But then we got two more boats, so now he just switches boats…LOL
Yeah definately follow all boating rules. Last spring I was on Utah lake and my motor quit for some reason. I was glad I had my oars with me. Also if it is the law to register your boat you better do it. You won’t like the ticket that comes with not registering. Here in Utah it is only $37.50 for the year to register either tube or toon.

In retrospect I can read it in between the lines in this thread. Well the weight distribution did nothing the rear of the toon was only 1" above the water, definitely not something id feel comfortable fishing from. Almost a complete waste,but I did accomplish a task and got off my arse.
I don’t think the bumpers will do anything this toon is simply not made to have weight.

The point of this purchase was to move faster on the water. Im open to either a yak, or a toon that can handle a tm.
This is my first toon as well as my first toon mod so I wasn’t expecting much. On the flipside this toon is great foe regular oar/flipper use and if all else fails I still have a good toon with a sweet rod holder for the Barrett season.
Does anyone have some suggestion’s for a cheaper toon that can handle a tm?
There are a lot of different types, styles, of toons out there that are available used. My first toon I purchased in 1995 and I am still using it. I purchased another just like it last fall for $50 that is only two years newer than what I already had. Of course it needed a little work to get it ready for some fishin time but not much. Keep checking around you will be amazed at what you find. Here is one that I personally like. It can be obtained at Costco.com
It is the Classis Accessories 9’ Wilderness. I may get one of these when it comes time to replace what I already have.
I am sorry that I didn’t see this thread before. FG is right I have two Creek Company sport and classic pontoons. They were my first toons and they are ok at best. My son likes his sport but he does not use a motor. My first time out I set my CCC up all wrong. I was popping wheelies big time. I talked with FG and others and even emailed CC and talked to them. Here is the facts. FG is right. The sharp rockers on these boats are just not a great design. The amount of pontoon under water is very short so they don’t track that great. They are ultra sensitive to frame location. I finally figured out how to set mine up and it works good as far as level ride goes. I don’t see how a motor would work on them at all.
For very light duty they are like I said OK at best. I worry about a perch or a walleye giving them the old “fin a ru” and popping the toon.
I don’t recommend the CC classic or any toon like them or the one you have for that matter.
Good PVC covered pontoons are easy to find used and right now they are cheep. Between 200 or 300 dollars will get you a 8 to 10 foot boat with PVC covers and the ability to mount a motor. I have seen a ton of them and I bought a FC9 for 200 dollars. For keeping things in a budget I would recommend a used good quality toon. These pictures below show the CC’s and how they sit with some work. Ron

For cheaper, check out promotion sales usually around holidays from the major mail order retailers. Bargain barns at Cabellas, etc. sometimes have very low prices. Sometimes you can buy low rocker pontoons cheap, esp. if discontinued, which can be switched out with other brand boats. This works IF you have a good strong basic frame with some versatility in the way the toons are attached. I used ratchet straps to attach $50 clearance priced versa vessel low rocker pontoons to an existing frame from another boat, for example. http://www.mertechengineering.com/store.htm
But they don’t have anything on clearance right now.
Creek company has frequent sales and clearance on boats and parts on their website, sometimes including free shipping.
A lot depends on how you will be using your boat. Generally heavy boat weight is your enemy in tube/toon type of boating, with all things being considered. This is especially the case if you will be packing your boat or have to carry a distance to your put in spot. PVC coated fabric is best on pontoons, but too heavy when packing.
What water did you hit for that bass… IM thinking I need to hit Wohlford and/or Dixon soon… :-).. maybe break out the switch rod with some clousers..

Im not at liberty to say, this is acurrently closed lake. I know some of the land owners and I have permisson to fish right now.
Sutherland just opened and is producing, the big girls are starting to put their make-up on at dixon as well. I haven’t heard much from wholford but we know if your not hearing reports on a particular lake this time of year, it usualy means its goin off!
No problem Ron thanks for the input anyway. The CA toon is good without the motor so im now going to attempt to sell it and find a more durable toon, obviously a motor is the most important part for what I need.
Im going to stray away from toons that are “lifted” at the ends, i need as much float in the water to help out with the weight.
Ill have to give one of those two a try… see what happens…
